Scherr Leads Penguins to Second-Place Finish at Dayton Flyer Invitational

Senior Kevin Scherr finished tied for fourth to lead the Youngstown State men's golf team to a second-place finish on Tuesday in the Dayton Flyer Invitational at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio.
The Penguins finished with a three-round team total of 870, which ranks as the 10th-lowest 54-hole performance in program history. YSU posted a 292 in each of the first two rounds on Monday before concluding the event with a final-round 286 on Tuesday. The Guins were tied for second place following the first two rounds of play.
Wright State claimed the tournament title at four under par with a three-round 848. Youngstown State finished one stroke ahead of third-place Ball State while Ohio and Loyola rounded out the top five. The Penguins also finished ahead of Horizon League foes Cleveland State and Purdue Fort Wayne.
Scherr finished at even par with a three-round score of 213 (71-74-68) to earn his second top-10 finish of the season. The senior's even-par 71 in the first round featured 11 pars, two birdies and an eagle on the par-four No. 16. After making a pair of bogeys over his first three holes, Scherr went on to make par or better on 13 of his final 15 holes. The Nazareth, Pa., native recorded 13 pars and an eagle on the par-five No. 10 during the second round of action. The senior's final-round 68, which marks his low round of the season, included 11 pars and five birdies as he made par or better on 15 of his first 16 holes. Scherr fired a bogey-free, two-under-par 34 on the front nine and a one-under-par 34 on the back nine during the final session to climb from 11th to fourth in the individual standings.
Bryan Kordupel finished tied for 16th with a three-round 219 (76-72-71). The senior's first-round 76 featured nine pars and three birdies while his second-round 72 included seven pars and five birdies. The Boardman, Ohio, native shot a one-under-par 35 with three birdies on the front nine during the second round of play. Kordupel's final-round 71 featured 12 pars and three birdies as he made par or better on each of his first 10 holes. The senior fired a one-under-par 35 on the front nine during the final round of play.
Cole Christman also tied for 16th with a three-round total of 219 (73-73-73). The junior's first-round 73 featured 11 pars and three birdies as he made par or better on 12 of his final 14 holes. During the second round, the Boardman, Ohio, native recorded 10 pars and four birdies as he made par or better on 11 of his final 12 holes. Christman carded a one-under-par 35 with three birdies on the front nine during the second session. The junior's final-round 73 included nine pars and four birdies as he made par or better on 10 of his first 12 holes.
Playing as an individual, Dean Austalosh tied for 25th with a three-round 223 (78-71-74). The sophomore's first-round 78 featured 10 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 6. Austalosh's even-par 71 in the second round, which marks the low round of his career, included 11 pars and four birdies as he made par or better on 12 of his first 13 holes. The Campbell, Ohio, native recorded a one-under-par 35 on the front nine during the second round. The sophomore's final-round 74 featured 12 pars and a pair of birdies as he made par or better on 11 of his first 14 holes.
Ken Keller carded a three-round 224 (75-73-76) to finish in a tie for 31st. The senior's first-round 75 included 12 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 7. Keller's second-round 73 featured 13 pars and two birdies as he made par or better on 15 of his first 16 holes. The Youngstown, Ohio, native posted a bogey-free, one-under-par 35 on the front nine during the second session. The senior's final-round 76 saw him make 11 pars and a birdie on the par-five No. 5.
Zack Ford tied for 34th with a three-round score of 225 (73-78-74). The senior's first-round 73 included 12 pars and a pair of birdies as he made par or better on 14 of his first 15 holes. The Cochranton, Pa., native recorded a one-under-par 35 with two birdies on the front nine during the opening round. Ford's second-round 78 featured 11 pars while his final-round 74 included 13 pars and a birdie on the par-four No. 18.
Wright State's Bryce Haney won medalist honors at four under par with a three-round 209 (70-71-68). Haney finished one stroke ahead of Dayton's Blake Solomon, who finished with a three-round 210 (71-69-70).
Youngstown State will conclude its fall season on Oct. 23-24 with the Towson Fall Invitational at Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville, Md.
