
Men Win Seven Events at Season-Opening Zips Classic

Akron, Ohio - The Youngstown State men's swimming and diving team had a solid season-opening performance at the the two-day Zips Classic which concluded on Saturday at the Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium.
Freshmen Dominic Bono and Aleksa Radenovic and sophomores Gavin Webb and Soma Albert picked up swimming event victories while sophomore Cody Thill won both diving events.
Radnovic had a huge performance in the morning session on Saturday setting a pair of school records in event wins. He won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.93 seconds and later took first place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.04 seconds.
Bono started the day off strong on Saturday with a victory in the 400 IM. He posted a time of 4:01.82 to earn the event win while teammate Brenden Reeves clocked the second-fastest time at 4:03.43.
Webb had an impressive time of 15:40.26 in the 1,650 freestyle to win the event by almost 15 full seconds. The time was just seven seconds off Webb's school record which he set in April. Webb earned a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:34.25 on Friday night. He was just .24 behind the first-place finisher from Denison. He finished fourth in the 400 IM.
Albert led a 1-2 YSU finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:49.77. Bono turned in another solid swim with a time of 1:50.03. Albert was fourth in the 100 back with a time of 50.94 seconds.
Redden was third in the 50 free with a time of 21.00 seconds and third in the 100 free with a time of 46.45 seconds. Darren Laing finished fourth in the 100 free with a time of 46.52 seconds.
In the one-meter dive, Thill won the event with a score of 240.53 points. Thill scored a 251.25 to take first in the three-meter event.
In the 200 IM for the men, YSU had four performers under 1:57 - Ales Zupanec (1:56.58), Jasper Leikens (1:56.67), Chris Barton (1:56.87) and Tarin Frodyma (1:56.78).
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Guins finished .01 seconds behind Xavier clocking a time of 1:24.27. YSU was also second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:23.54.
For the women, Tess Weiskopf was third in the 1-meter with a score of 248.78 while Kayla Wrasman finished four with a score of 240.15.
Jael Dankle led the way in the distance events. She was fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:21.46 and eighth in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.15. Olivia Wilcox was sixth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.87 seconds.
In the team scores, the men had 982 points while Denison scored 1,245 points and Xavier had 805. For the women, YSU had 503 points while Xavier had 535.5 points, Denison finished with 849 and Akron had 1,542.5.
The Penguins are back in action on Friday when they visit Cleveland State.
