YSU Earns Four Wins, Tops Standings After First Day of MOTIV Penguin Classic

The Youngstown State bowling team went 4-1 in head-to-head play and ended the opening day of the 2021-22 season with its two highest match totals of the day on Friday at the MOTIV Penguin Classic. The tournament is being held at Holiday Bowl in Struthers, Ohio.

The Penguins shook off a tough opening match by winning each of their final four matches by more than 75 pins. Youngstown State started the day with an 892 set and finished it with a 1,050, and the improvement resulted in YSU posting the highest pinfall in the 10-team field on Friday.

"Today was a solid start to our season," said YSU head coach Doug Kuberski. "I'm very proud of how well we supported each other today with positive and powerful energy, and everyone played a big part. The lanes were tricky pair to pair, and our shot-making and communication improved throughout the day. We will enjoy our evening, rest up, and look to continue elevating together tomorrow."

YSU totaled 4,846 pins in its five Baker matches, which was 94 pins more than second-place Lewis. The Penguins averaged 193.8 per game and 969.2 per set.

Youngstown State, which was ranked seventh in the NTCA Preseason Poll that was released Thursday night, dropped its opening match 1,010-892 to Lewis. After a few lineup adjustments, the Penguins won their final four contests of the day. YSU topped 11th-ranked Duquesne 973-895, Valparaiso 840-859, Saint Francis (Pa.) 1,001-859, and Mercyhurst 1,050-901.

The Penguins will bowl against Lewis again to start Saturday's traditional round at 9 a.m. YSU will then compete against Morgan State, Medaille, No. 3 Arkansas State and Walsh.
