Vardakis Picks Up Win In Season-Opening Dual at NIU

DeKalb, Ill. - Vasilis Vardakis opened the season with a singles win, but the Youngstown State men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Northern Illinois at the Chick Evans Field House on Saturday.
The dual match was the season opener for both programs.
Vardakis earned a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 decision at No. 1 singles over Bor Schweiger Muzar. The Penguins hung tough in singles play dropping a pair of matches in three sets. At No. 3, Joao Garretto won the first set 7-5 before losing the next two 6-2, 6-4 to Mikko Malinen. At No. 5, David Alvarez Moreno also won his first set, 6-4, against Oliver Valentinsson before falling 6-2, 6-2 in the next two sets. At No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles, the Huskies won in straight sets.
In doubles play, NIU on all three matches earning 6-4 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and a 6-3 win at No. 3.
The Penguins are back in action at Noon on Sunday when they take on North Dakota at the Chick Evans Field House.
