Penguin Drop Hard-Fought Contest to North Dakota

DeKalb, Ill. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to North Dakota on Sunday afternoon at the Chick Evans Field House.
Vasilis Vardakis, Laurentiu Mandocescu and Erik Gran picked up singles victories for the Penguins (0-2). The Fighting Hawks (3-1) won the doubles point and earned singles wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to win the match.
YSU picked up a win No. 1 doubles as Vardakis and Will Everett earned a 6-4 win, but the UND won at No. 2 and No. 3 to win the point.
The Fighting Hawks earned wins in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 while Mandocescu won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 and Gran won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3. Vardakis earned his second win of the weekend ralling for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over John Parat at No. 1.
The match was decided at No. 4 singles between David Alverez Moreno and Gian McDonnell. McDonnell won the first set, 6-2, while Moreno won the second set, 6-3. In the deciding set, McDonnell won 6-2 to claim the dual match.
The Penguins are next in action on Friday when they play host to Buffalo. It will be the men's first-ever dual match at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
