Catching Up With Freshman Janessa Bringe

Freshman Janessa Bringe (Computer Science/Visalia, Calif.) gives YSUsports.com an update in this Q&A session.
What is your current location?
I am currently in Visalia, California. I am currently living with my parents and my dog Birdie.
How are you keeping your mind on swimming?
When you are out of the pool, swimming is always on your mind, especially now that you aren't allowed to be in the pool. All I can think about and look forward too, is when you are going to be able to get into the pool again.
What are you doing to stay in shape (working out, running)?
The worst part about it is, you don't know when that is going to happen, since everything is so up in the air right now, with this virus being so fluid. All of our gyms and pools have closed, so I am running outside in the morning, as well as doing yoga, and stretching.
How have you looked at things differently in the past two weeks?
I have definitely looked at things differently in the past couple of weeks, especially since the California governor has initiated a lock down statewide. But especially now that I will be doing all online classes which means you are going to have to work harder because you aren't getting that in person instruction. You have to make time to not only get the notes done, but also continue to do the homework and makes sure you take the tests on time now that you don't have a teacher to remind you about all the little things.
What is going to be the toughest thing about not physically going to class?
The toughest thing about not going to class is definitely not knowing if you have everything you need for the exam. Making sure you know all the information, which now you sort of have to teach yourself.
How has dealing with the current circumstances brought your team together?
Well the biggest thing is that we are all in the same boat of not being able to swim, and just trying to come together in these hard times is what we are doing, and that is all we really can do.
What makes you most excited for next year?
I am looking forward to meeting new friends and seeing old ones, and all the new classes that I will be doing next semester all the while advancing in my major.
What do you enjoy the most about being at YSU?
I enjoy having small classes, and having teammates in your class to be able to study together, and if you need help, you have teammates to help you out and you also if you don't understand the section or the homework, you can help each other out. That has to be the best part about swimming and going to school at YSU for me.
How often do you FaceTime your teammates? What do you guys talk about?
I FaceTime my teammates sometimes, especially now that classes are starting again, and since I have some classes with them. We are going to have study sessions together before the exams and be texting each other if we need help with homework, which we have been doing already.
Have you learned anything about yourself during this?
We are still teammates no matter what, and that is definitely the best part. I have learned about myself, that I can easily adapt to the new changes that the University made at such short notice, which is definitely something that was helpful.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of your sport?
I love hanging out with my friends, reading books and comic books, watching movies, especially Marvel, and surfing.
If you weren't a swimmer or diver, what sport would you like to do?
I would have done water polo if I wasn't a swimmer.
