Freshman Zach Tomasic (Mathematics/Moon Township, Pa.) gives YSUsports.com an update in this Q&A session.
What is your current location?
Moon Township, Pa. I'm living with my family (mother, father, and sister).
How are you keeping your mind on swimming?
I keep my mind on swimming by looking at swimming news and working out and texting my team.
What are you doing to stay in shape (working out, running)?
I work out with ISOs, elliptical, or running. Actually, my club is starting a live dryland workout that I will take part in.
What is going to be the toughest thing about not physically going to class?
The toughest thing about not physically going to class is not having a schedule.
How has dealing with the current circumstances brought your team together?
I don't know about the women's team (though I text and snapchat some of them quite a lot), but the guys team loves to snap chat and joke around with each other on our group chat.
What makes you most excited for next year?
I'm excited to see my new teammates and to see most of this year's teammates again.
What do you enjoy the most about being at YSU?
I enjoy the people at YSU the most. I've made so many friends this year.
What do you want or need to improve upon the most?
I need to improve on my non-breaststroke kick.
How often do you FaceTime your teammates? What do you guys talk about?
The team usually does not Facetime (though the guys had a video chat on snapchat which was just us messing around about swimming and stuff, and one of my female teammates called me and we caught up on life for about 20 minutes)
Have you learned anything about yourself during this?
About myself, I learned that I'm much weaker than I thought I was: emotionally, physically, and sometimes mentally (but not usually). I also learned that others' emotions can affect me much more than I thought, especially if it involves those I am very close to.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of your sport?
I like video games and cello and watching really stupid videos on YouTube.
If you weren't a swimmer or diver, what sport would you like to do?
If I wasn't a swimmer, I would possibly try track (sprint or mid-distance runner), baseball, or soccer (goalie)... I can't really pick one sport (and esports does not exactly count).
Any interesting story about yourself you would like to share?
It was weightlifting, and I was in the weight room. Jake said for us to run, and I was so excited to run that I ran face-first into a glass window I thought wasn't there. Everyone that was there lost it. Also, to reset my head during my sleep, sometimes I pick it up and slam it down on my pillow. One morning, at 7:07 a.m., I slammed my head onto the corner of the desk right by my bed. I still have a slight scar.
Who on your team has organized any kind of group chats?
I don't remember exactly who organized the group chats, but on snapchat, we have a guys chat, OG guys chat, coed chat, Brad's OGs chat, "red team" chat, and freshmen chat (that I know of)
Who is the funniest person on the team? Hard to choose. There's quite a few funny people.
Who is the smartest person on the team? I have a feeling everyone will say me because I know Pi to 130 digits and do math problems in my head all the time. Tiphaine Saint-Gilles is smart (I say her even though this was her last year), Janessa Bringe is pretty smart and Ryan Scherer is pretty smart.
Who is the toughest person on the team? Plenty of the team is tough, so it's hard to choose one. Strongest would be Wilson Cannon and Nolan Dennes, though.
Who was the most improved member of the team during 2019-20? Jackson Shellogg and Charlie Quinn, considering they were sprinters that switched to distance.
