Cheong, Cannon Lead Penguins On Day Three of HL Championships

Rochester, Mich. - Wilson Cannon set a school record in the 100 butterfly while Brandon Cheong became the first Penguins to reach a final on day three of the Horizon League Championships at the Oakland Aquatic Center.
Cannon lowered his school mark to 50.08 seconds in the 100 fly to finish 20th. His previous-best time was 51.07 seconds. Mason Rassega also swam a personal-best time of 54.05 seconds in the event.
Cheong advanced to the B Final in the 100-yard breaststroke becoming the first men's swimmer in school history to reach a final event. He posted a time of 59.05 in the prelims to move into the final. Zach Tomasic just missed qualifying with a time of 1:00.01 and Duncan Moss had a time of 1:00.56.
In the finals, Cheong placed 16th with a time of 58.75 seconds.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Ryan Scherer had YSU's best performance with a time of 1:45.94 while Jackson Shellogg posted a time of 1:48.61. Nolan Dennes led the way in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.79 seconds.
The final day of the Horizon League Championships is set for Saturday. Events on tap are the 1,650-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard butterfly, the three-meter dive and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
