Penguins Finish Weekend With Loss at Wright State

Box Score

Fairborn, Ohio - The Youngstown State women's basketball team dropped to 2-2 in Horizon League play on the season after falling 91-41 at Wright State on Saturday afternoon.

The Raiders won their third straight game to improve to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in Horizon League play, keeping pace with the conference leaders. Youngstown State fell for the second time in three days and dropped to 9-6 overall.

Maddie Schires came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points for the Penguins. She was 4-for-10 from 3-point range, but YSU went 5-for-25 as a team. The Penguins shot 25 percent overall from the field while Wright State shot 51.4 percent.

Anisja Harris went 7-for-10 from 3-point range to score a game-high 21 points for Wright State.

Miller and Baker hit elbow jumpers on Wright State's first two possessions, and the Raiders started 6-for-9 from the field with six different players making field goals. Wright State led 13-3 at that point, but YSU kept it scoreless for almost four minutes. Ny'Dajah Jackson scored five straight points during that stretch to get the Penguins within 13-8, and Wright State scored the final three points of the period to lead 16-8 after 10 minutes.

Quinece Hatcher and Jackson scored the first four points of the second period as the Penguins got within 16-12. Wright State, which had gone 1-of-9 from the field since its hot start, then scored 11 straight points that was part of an overall 22-8 burst to end the half.

Harris hit two 3-pointers during the 11-0 run that put the Raiders ahead 27-12. Gabby Lupardus came in for an injured McKenah Peters to make two free throws at the 3:19 mark to end the run, and Schires scored YSU's final six points of the half on a 3-pointer and an old-fashioned three-point play. Peters did not return, meaning the Penguins lost the reigning Horizon League Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week in games this week.

Wright State outscored Youngstown State 24-8 in the third quarter and 29-13 in the fourth as the Penguins played the final 23 minutes with eight players in uniform.

Youngstown State will continue its five-game road stretch at Cleveland State on Friday at 7 p.m.
