Bohannon, Simmons Score Career Highs in 82-74 Loss at Cleveland State

Cleveland, Ohio -- Junior Naz Bohannon and sophomore Jelani Simmons each posted career-scoring highs, but the Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped an 82-74 decision to Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon at the Wolstein Center.
The Penguins, who made a season-high 11 3-pointers, fall to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in Horizon League play while the Vikings improve to 6-10 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Bohannon recorded his third straight double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Simmons poured in 19 points and tied a career high with five 3-pointers. Junior Michael Akuchie scored 11 points with three 3-pointers.
Leading Cleveland State was Torrey Patton with 25 points and Algevon Eichelberger with 14 points. Tre Gomillion and Deante Johnson each had 10 points for the Vikings.
Down, 49-40, with 15:35 left, Simmons scored seven straight points with a 3-pointer, a layup, and two free throws to get the Penguins within two, 49-47, at the 14:24 mark.
Cleveland State extended its lead back to five, 56-51, but Simmons hit another 3-pointer and Bohannon's driving layup tied the game at 56-56 with 9:30 to go.
The Vikings scored the next seven points to take a 63-56 lead after a layup by Eichelberger, a jumper by Kasheem Thomas, and a 3-pointer by Patton at the 7:29 mark.
A layup by Bohannon and a 3-pointer by Akuchie cut the lead back down to two, 63-61, and Simmons' fifth 3-pointer by the game got the Penguins back within three, 69-66, with 3:05 to go.
Akuchie made his third 3-pointer of the game to get YSU back within four with 1:42 left, but Thomas' 3-pointer at the one-minute mark extended the Vikings lead back to nine, 78-69.
In the first half, saw eight lead changes and four ties,Cleveland State score 32 of its 35 points in the paint and outscored the Penguins, 32-12, inside.
The Penguins used a 14-6 run midway through the first half to erase a seven-point deficit (17-10) to take a 24-23 lead with 4:14 to go after a 3-pointer by Darius Quisenberry.
Simmons gave the Penguins a 30-27 lead with a 3-pointer at the 2:52 mark but the Vikings scored eight of the final 10 points of the half to take a 35-32 lead at halftime.
Youngstown State hosts Oakland on Thursday at 7 p.m. in its first game at Beeghly Center since Dec. 18.
