The Youngstown State women's basketball team scrapped to force overtime, but Green Bay used a 12-2 run late in the second extra period to defeat the Penguins, 70-63, on Friday evening at Beeghly Center.
Maddie Schires hit a 3-pointer and Taylor Petit added two free throws to put the Penguins up 61-58 with 3:18 left in double overtime. Green Bay, though, scored nine straight points over the next 2:33 to take a 67-61 lead. Gabby Lupardus' layup with 33 seconds left got the Penguins within four, but the Phoenix made three out of four free throws to seal the victory.
Chelsea Olson led the Penguins (11-8, 4-4 Horizon League) with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Petit also posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The last time two Penguins record double-doubles in the same game was Heidi Schlegel (25 points, 15 rebounds) and Latisha Walker (25 points, 11 rebounds) against Akron on Dec. 29, 2014. Ny'Dajah Jackson scored 13 points while Schires also posted 11 points.
Leading Green Bay (10-10, 5-3 Horizon League) was led by Caitlyn Hibner with 20 points while Lyndsey Robson and Meghan Pingel added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Hibner scored 17 of her points after halftime.
The Phoenix led by seven in the fourth period, but YSU stormed back with a 12-0 run to take the lead. Schires made a pair of free throws, and Olson hit a jumper to put the Penguins up 45-40 to cap the run. Green Bay then scored eight straight points on made three layups and two charity tosses to take a 48-45 lead with 21 seconds left in the game.
Jackson forced overtime by hitting a 3-pointer with 4.7 seconds remaining, and the Penguins had leads in both overtime periods before the Phoenix prevailed.
The Penguins had a chance to win the game in the waning seconds of the first overtime. With the game tied at 56-56, Petit made a steal with 41 seconds left, and, after a YSU timeout, Schires misfired on two 3-point attempts, the last with one second remaining.
On YSU's final possession of the fourth quarter, Petit grabbed an offensive rebound off of a Schires miss and found Jackson on the right wing for the game-tying 3-pointer. Green Bay's Hailey Oskey's attempt hit off the side of the rim to force the extra period.
The Penguins struggled from the field for most of the night and finished shooting 26.6 percent for the game. They tied the school record for most 3-point attempts in a game with 48, and nine of them found the bottom of the next. Youngstown State was 12-for-12 from the free-throw line, and it committed just five turnovers in 50 minutes.
Defensively, YSU held Green Bay to 38.6 percent shooting overall and 25.8 percent from the 3-point arc. The Penguins turned Green Bay's 14 turnovers into a 14-0 edge in points off turnovers, and YSU also converted 15 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points.
In the first quarter, the Penguins struggled from the field making just one of their first nine shots, and the Phoenix built an early 7-3 lead with 4:44 left. Baskets by Lupardus and Jackson got the Penguins within 9-7 with 50 seconds left, and a pair of free throws by Olson knotted the game at 9-9 at the end of the quarter.
Quinece Hatcher gave the Penguins their first lead of the game, 11-9, and Olson hit her second 3-pointer of the game to put YSU up 14-12 at the 8:35 mark of the second stanza. The Phoenix scored five straight points to reclaim a three-point edge before a 3-pointer by Petit knotted the game at 17-17 with 3:22 left before the half. The Phoenix, however, buried a pair of 3-pointers with 1:18 and 19 seconds remaining to take a 23-17 lead into the locker room.
The Penguins scored seven of the first nine points of the second half on a Schires 3 and a pair of jumpers by Jackson to get within one, 25-24, at the 4:41 mark of the third quarter. Green Bay built its lead to four before Jen Wendler's jumper trimmed the Phoenix lead to two 30-28. Robson's 3-pointer pushed the lead to five, 33-28, before Olson hit her third 3 of the game to get YSU within two, 33-31, at the 1:16 mark.
Green Bay closed out the third quarter and opened the fourth on a 7-2 run to extend its lead to seven, 40-33, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Jackson and Schires got the Penguins within one, 40-39, with 6:49 remaining in regulation. Following a Green Bay turnover, Petit's layup with 5:44 left gave the Penguins a 41-40 edge.
The Penguins close out their short homestand against Milwaukee, Sunday, Jan. 26. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
