Byrnes, Pe'a Post Nine Kills in Loss at Wright State

The Youngstown State volleyball team got nine kills from Alexia Byrnes and Brooklen Pe'a in a 3-0 loss at Wright State on Saturday afternoon at McLin Gym. The set scores were 25-22, 25-22, 25-14.
Byrnes, YSU's sophomore setter, added 20 assists and seven digs in the three-setter. Aleah Hughes had a solid afternoon with six kills on a .294 attack percentage and a team-best 16 digs, and Margaux Thompson added 15 digs.
Celia Powers led Wright State to its 12th straight victory with nine kills, seven digs and a match-best six blocks. Jenna Story led all players with 22 digs.
YSU led the Raiders 21-19 late in the first set following a Pe'a kill, but the Raiders rallied by scoring six of the final seven points in the set. Wright State then went on a 9-3 run in the second set to go up 21-14 late, but YSU battled and scored six of the next seven points to get within 22-20. Hughes had three kills in a block in that stretch, but Wright State held on to win again by 25-22. The Raiders led 7-2 early in the third and did not allow the Penguins to get closer than four.
Youngstown State will play its first Horizon League home match on Friday against UIC at 6 p.m.
