Byrnes Approaches Triple-Double in Four-Setter vs. Coastal Carolina

The Youngstown State volleyball team had an improved effort in its final day at the Towson Invitational on Saturday as the Penguins hit .250 and competed well in a four-set loss to Coastal Carolina. The set scores against the unbeaten and invitational champion Chanticleers were 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17.
Setter Alexia Byrnes just missed a triple-double with a team-high 12 kills, 36 assist and nine digs, and she helped the Penguins hit .250 as a team. That was a big improvement from Friday when the Penguins hit .088 combined against Towson and Albany in 3-0 losses.
Alyssa Oswald added 11 kills, and all-tournament team selection Aleah Hughes posted eight kills and a match-best 20 digs. Erin Kalahar had five of YSU's eight aces, including three straight early in the first set after the Chanticleers scored the first five points of the match.
Mariia Levanova had 17 kills and 11 digs to lead Coastal Carolina.
After the Chanticleers led 5-0, YSU scored eight of the next 10 points to take an 8-7 lead on an Aimee Beaupre ace. CCU opened up a pair of six-point leads before a Beaupre block got the Penguins as close as 23-21 late. Coastal Carolina took the first set 25-21, which is the same score it won the second.
A Byrnes kill put the Penguins ahead 6-2 in the third, and YSU had to rally late after Coastal Carolina went up 19-17. Hughes and Kalahar both had two kills in the final spurt, and Beaupre came up with another kill on set point.
Youngstown State led 4-0 in the fourth set, but Coastal Carolina went on an 8-1 run to take an 8-5 lead that it would never lose.
The Penguins will host the YSU Red & White Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Beeghly Center.
