No. 12/15 Indiana Pulls Away in Second Half to Beat YSU, 93-56

Box Score

Bloomington, Ind. – No. 12/15 Indiana made its first eight field-goal attempts in the second half and pulled away over the final 20 minutes to beat the Youngstown State women's basketball team 93-56 on Sunday afternoon at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

The Penguins battled the Hoosiers in the first half and led by as many as seven points twice in the second period. YSU led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter and trailed just 41-38 before Indiana held a 52-18 edge in the second half.

McKenah Peters scored 14 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, and Chelsea Olson had 14 points on nine field-goal attempts while adding five caroms. Taylor Petit scored seven points, and Gabby Lupardus registered a game-high nine assists, eight of which came in the first half.

Ali Patberg scored 15 of her game-high 18 points in the second half to lead Indiana.

As hot as the 12th-ranked Hoosiers were to start the second half, they were ever colder to start the game as Youngstown State held IU without a field goal for almost eight minutes. The Hoosiers missed their first nine shots, and they were 3-for-14 from the field two minutes into the second period.

Petit scored the first points of the game at the 6:42 mark, and the Penguins led by four twice in the opening period. Quinece Hatcher's bucket with 5:39 remaining made the score 4-0, and Olson's three-point play at the 4:22 park put the Guins up 7-3.

Indiana's six points came from the free-throw line, and its first field goal came when Keyanna Warthen hit a 3-pointer with 2:11 on the clock. The lead changed hands six times before the end of the period, and a Peters basket on a pass from Lupardus with 31 seconds remaining gave the Penguins a 15-14 lead.

Youngstown State's lead grew to seven at 23-16 when Peters converted a three-point play on another assist from Lupardus at the 7:59 mark, and Peters followed with a free throw. Maddie Schires' 3-pointer with 6:29 remaining put YSU ahead 28-21, but that's when IU started to get hot. The Hoosiers scored the next 12 points as YSU went scoreless for three-and-a-half minutes, and IU scored 20 points over the final 6:18 of the half.

Olson hit a 3-pointer to stop the run and get the Penguins within 33-31, and Peters scored on the next two possessions as YSU stayed within 38-35. Jaelynn Penn's 3-pointer at the 1:17 mark pushed IU's advantage to 41-35, but Mady Aulbach hit a 3-pointer on YSU's final possession to make the score 41-38 at halftime.

While Penn scored 14 of Indiana's 27 points in the second period, YSU kept pace by scoring 23 points. The Penguins were 4-for-4 from 3-point range in the period and went 5-for-13 in the half, but they were 0-for-8 in the second half.

Jen Wendler scored on the first possession of the second half to get the Penguins within 41-40, but Indiana scored 14 points to take a 55-40 lead at the 6:06 mark. Olson again stopped the run with a basket to get YSU within 13, but that's as close as it would get. The Penguins stayed within 15 points until the final 90 seconds of the third period, and the margin was 63-46 heading into the fourth.

The Hoosiers then scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter, and they scored 20 of the final 23 points in the final five-and-a-half minutes to add to the lead.

Youngstown State shot 39.3 percent in the game and finished 5-for-21 from 3-point range. Indiana was 22-for-29 from the field in the second half and finished at 61.8 percent for the game. The Hoosiers were 12-for-26 from beyond the arc.

Youngstown State will conclude its non-conference schedule next week with a pair of contests against non-Division I opponents. The Penguins will host Lake Erie College on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the YSU men's basketball program, and they will welcome Muskingum on Friday at 11 a.m. for the Seventh Annual Chick-Fil-A School Field Trip Game.
