The Youngstown State bowling team had its first off day of the season on Friday as play began at the Track Kat Klash, which is being held at Emerald Lanes in Houston, Texas.
The Penguins went 1-4 in head-to-head Baker matches and finished the first day of qualifying in 12th place in total pinfall. YSU finished with 4,321 pins for an average game of 172.8.
"Going through these kinds of days is an important part of growth and becoming a championship-caliber team," YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. "We gained lots of valuable experience and information together today, and I'm confident we will come out swinging tomorrow."
Youngstown State, which won its first two tournaments of the fall, opened the Track Kat Klash with its highest score of the day in a 1,001-929 loss to fourth-ranked Nebraska. The Penguins sat fifth in pinfall after that set, but they dropped to 863, 820 and 815 over their next three matches in losses to No. 5 Sam Houston State, Jackson State and Upper Iowa. Youngstown State finished the afternoon on a winning note by topping Texas Southern 894-796.
Nebraska leads the field after the first day with a five-game total of 4,947, and McKendree (4,858), Sam Houston State (4,809) and North Carolina A&T (4,746) are second through fourth.
YSU will compete in five traditional games on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. The Penguins will bowl against No. 8 North Carolina A&T, No. 20 Duquesne, Southern, Prairie View A&M and No. 14 Tulane.
