Three Place in Top 10 as Penguins Finish Second at Towson Fall Invitational

Grasonville, Md. - Three Penguins placed in the top 10 of the individual standings as the Youngstown State men's golf team finished second in the Towson Fall Invitational on Sunday at Prospect Bay Country Club.
Saturday's first-round results were made final on Sunday after the second and final round of event was canceled due to unplayable conditions resulting from rain.
Junior Kevin Scherr carded a three-under-par 69 on Saturday to finish tied for second, junior C.J. Hughes tied for fourth with a 70 and redshirt freshman Derek Miller shot a 71 in his first collegiate round to finish tied for sixth.
The Penguins recorded an 18-hole score of 291 (+3) to finish two strokes behind the tournament champion Robert Morris and claim their best team placing of the season. YSU earned its second straight top-two finish at Prospect Bay Country Club after winning the Towson Spring Invitational last April.
Scherr earned his second consecutive top-five finish and his third of the fall season overall. The junior earned medalist honors at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational last week, and tied for fourth at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in early September.
Scherr's impressive first-round 69 featured 11 pars and five birdies. After a birdie and a bogey to begin his round, he made par or better on 15 of his final 16 holes including each of his last 12 to notch his third sub-70 round of the season. He played the back nine at two under par with birdies at No. 11 and No. 16. Scherr also birdied No. 1, No. 7 and No. 8 on the front nine. The junior finished just one stroke behind Max Palmer of Robert Morris, who won medalist honors with a four-under-par 68.
Hughes earned his first top-10 finish of the season and the third of his career with a season-low round of 70 that included 10 pars and five birdies. He played the front nine at three under par with four birdies, and made par or better on 12 of his final 14 holes. Hughes birdied No. 1, No. 5, No. 8 and No. 9 on the front nine before ending his round with a birdie on No. 18. The junior was competing for the first time since the season-opening Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate in early September.
Playing as an individual in his collegiate debut, Miller fired a one-under-par 71 that featured 13 pars and three birdies. After collecting two birdies and two pars over his first four holes, he suffered back-to-back bogeys to come back to even. The redshirt freshman responded by finishing his round with 11 pars and a birdie on No. 18 as he made par on each of his final nine holes. Miller, who began his round on No. 10, also birdied No. 12 and No. 13.
Ken Keller turned in a three-over-par 75 to finish tied for 20th and earn his fourth top-20 finish in five events this fall. The junior's round included 12 pars and a pair of birdies at No. 8 and No. 13. He was even on the front nine and made par or better on 10 of his first 11 holes including each of the first six.
Bryan Kordupel tied for 33rd with a 77 while Cole Christman tied for 43rd with an 80. Kordupel's round included birdies at No. 3 and No. 18. He made par or better on seven of his last nine holes to play the back nine at one over par. Christman's lone birdie came at the par-five No. 1 to begin his round.
YSU placed ahead of seven other teams in the tournament field. Fairleigh Dickinson finished one shot behind the Penguins in third (292) while the host Towson (296) and North Carolina A&T (297) rounded out the top five. Kyle Grube of Robert Morris shared runner-up honors with Scherr as YSU owned three of the event's eight-best individual scores.
Youngstown State will break from competition until beginning the spring portion of its 2019-20 season in February. The Penguins' complete spring schedule will be announced soon.
