Penguins Drop Four-Setter to Begin Weekend in Akron

Akron had four players reach double digits in kills and hit .273 as a team to beat the Youngstown State volleyball team in four sets on Friday at James A. Rhodes Arena. The set scores were 23-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-14.
Margaux Thompson led the Penguins with 14 kills and just three errors in 44 attempts for a .250 attack percentage. Brooklen Pe'a and Aleah Hughes both had nine kills, and Sarah Varcolla posted eight kills on a .263 clip. Thompson added 11 digs for a double-double, and Hughes had a team-high 20 digs.
Ashley Richardson paced Akron with 14 kills on just 21 attempts, and she did not have an error.
YSU jumped out to a 10-3 lead on a Varcolla kill in the opening set, and the lead grew to 16-6 at one point. Akron closed the gap to 19-16, and the deficit was just one at 24-23 as the Zips staved off YSU's first two set points. Varcolla finished the set with a kill to give YSU a 1-0 lead in the match.
Neither team led by more than two in the second set until Varcolla's kill gave the Penguins a 12-9 advantage. Akron's first three-point lead came at 20-17, and the 25-21 final score was the largest margin for either team in the set. The Zips scored the final three points of the set on back-to-back kills by Shelby Fulmer and one from Richardson.
Akron took control of the match with an 11-2 run in the third set that turned an 8-8 tie into a 19-10 lead. The Zips took the third set 25-16, and they scored 11 straight points in the fourth to take a 24-13 lead.
Youngstown State will play Toledo on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
