IUPUI Shuts Down YSU Offense as Penguins Fall 65-43

Box Score

Sydney Hall scored a career-high 24 points, and IUPUI clamped down on defense to beat the Youngstown State women's basketball team 65-43 on Saturday evening at Beeghly Center.

IUPUI remained unbeaten in Horizon League play with a 3-0 record and improved to 11-3 overall. YSU dropped to an even 2-2 mark in conference play and finished its six-game homestand with a 4-2 record.

Hall was 9-of-11 overall from the field and went 6-for-7 from 3-point range. She made four of IUPUI's seven 3-pointers in the first half, and the Jaguars finished with 10 as a team. YSU held IUPUI leading scorers Danielle Lawrence and Macee Williams to a combined 13 points, 15 below their combined average, but couldn't muster enough offense to match its defensive effort.

Sarah Cash led the Penguins with 11 points, nine of which came in the first half. Mary Dunn had seven, and Chelsea Olson scored six.

IUPUI got a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the second period to push its halftime lead to 37-28, and it outscored the Penguins 28-15 in the second half. YSU shot 41.4 percent in the first half but went 5-for-30 from the field in the final 20 minutes.

Hall hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions in the opening minutes as IUPUI scored the game's first eight points of the game. YSU scored seven of the next eight points, with five of those coming from Cash, to get within 9-7, and the margin was 20-16 at the end of the first period.

Hall hit another triple a minute into the second, and a 3 by Jenna Gunn gave IUPUI a 26-16 with six minutes remaining before halftime. An Indiya Benjamin 3-pointer gave the Penguins their first points of the period at the 5:02 mark, and a Dunn basket in transition cut the margin to five.

A Cash basket at the 1:59 mark got the Penguins to within 29-26, but IUPUI closed out the period on an 8-2 spurt to take a 37-28 advantage. Sydney Roule hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds for the Jaguars' seventh make of the half.

After Olson's 3-pointer made the score 39-31 at the 8:46 mark of the third period, IUPUI scored the next four points and led by double digits the rest of the game. The Jaguars led 52-39 at the end of the third, and they held YSU scoreless for the first 6:45 of the fourth period.

Youngstown State will play eight of its next 10 games on the road, starting with a tough stretch of three games in five days next week. YSU's next contest will be at nationally-ranked Green Bay on Thursday at 8 p.m. Eastern.
