Victory Over Valparaiso Highlights Day One at Crusader Classic

The No. 24 Youngstown State bowling team went 3-1 with a victory over No. 23 Valparaiso in day one of the Crusader Classic at Lakewood Bowl in Richton Park, Ill.
The Penguins began Friday's Baker matches by rallying for an 827-814 victory over Elmhurst College, and they followed that up with a 991-808 win over Lincoln Memorial. YSU began that match with a 245 game. Youngstown State beat host and 23rd-ranked Valparaiso 1,028-919 in its final win of the day, and the Penguins lost by 24 pins in a match with #2 Arkansas State, 965-931. YSU posted a 913 in a bye match to close the day.
Youngstown State finished day one of the competition sixth in total pins with 4,690. The Penguins averaged 187.6 in their 25 Baker games, and they sit 26 pins behind fifth-place Tulane.
Youngstown State will bowl five traditional team matches on Saturday beginning at 10:35 a.m. Eastern. The Penguins will begin the day against Maryville, and they'll also bowl No. 13 Tulane, Aurora, No. 1 Nebraska and No. 11 Central Missouri.
Due to Sacred Heart withdrawing from the tournament, Sunday's format has changed. YSU will bowl No. 14 Wisconsin-Whitewater in a traditional team match to start the day, and there will now be just two bracket matches instead of three.
