Penguins Fall to NKU in Home Finale

Sarah Varcolla had 13 kills and a match-high five blocks for the Youngstown State volleyball team in a 3-1 Penguins loss on Wednesday evening to Northern Kentucky at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 15-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-20.
Varcolla's 13 kills came on 30 swings, and she had a .367 attack percentage. Val Jeffery had 45 assists and 11 digs in her final home match, and Sam Brown added 10 kills. YSU had nine blocks as a team, but six of them came in the first set and none came in the final two.
Keely Creamer had 16 kills for Northern Kentucky, which had four players reach 10 kills.
The Penguins dominated the net in the first set with six blocks that gave them a .343 to .025 edge in attack percentage. YSU built a 9-3 lead and had an advantage of at least five the rest of the set in a 25-15 win.
Northern Kentucky held the Penguins to eight kills in the second set, and the Norse pulled away in the second half of the set after the score was tied at 11-11 to even the match.
Both teams were strong offensively in the third set as NKU hit .406 and YSU countered at .308. Youngstown State scored five of the first six points, but the Penguins' final lead was 8-7 following an Erin Kalahar kill. At that point, the Norse went on an 8-1 run to go up 15-9, and the visitors were able to hold off a late charge that got the Penguins within two twice.
YSU did not lead in the final set, and a 7-2 run allowed the Norse to go up 20-13.
Youngstown State will finish its season at UIC on Friday at 8 p.m.
