Volleyball Drops a Pair at Butler Invitational on Saturday

The Youngstown State volleyball dropped two matches at the Butler Invitational on Saturday, losing in five sets to Southern Illinois and in three sets to Missouri.
The Penguins took the first two sets against the Salukis, 25-19 and 25-15, but SIU rallied to take the final three sets, 25-12, 25-16, 15-5. The long first match meant a quick turnaround for the match against Missouri, and the undefeated Tigers won 25-12, 25-11, 25-22.
The Penguins had 28 kills and hit .210 as a team over the first two sets against Southern Illinois, but they had 16 kills and hit minus-.033 over the final three sets.
Sam Brown had eight of her team-high 11 kills in the first two sets, and Lori Vanbeek had seven of her eight in the first two sets as well. Nikki Thompson had 22 digs, and Sarah Varcolla had four of YSU's eight aces.
YSU went on an 8-2 run to go up 17-11 in the first set, and it led by at least four points the rest of the way to win 25-19. The Penguins then scored six straight points early in the second set to go up 8-4, and they led the rest of the way.
SIU's defense was much better after the break between the second and third sets, and the Salukis did not trail in winning the third set 25-12. SIU scored the final eight points of the second set to win 25-16, and the Salukis scored nine straight points in the fifth to take an insurmountable 11-3 advantage.
Abby Barrow had 19 kills and just one error in 34 attempts to lead Southern Illinois.
Carly Kan also had 19 kills to lead Missouri in YSU's second match of the day, and her total came on 37 swings in three sets. Varcolla had six kills, and Lauren Thompson registered five kills without an error in 10 attempts to lead the Penguins.
Missouri scored 10 of the final 11 points of the first set, and it built a 15-6 lead in the second. YSU trailed just 15-13 in the third, and it scored four straight points late to force the Tigers to call timeout at 24-22. Kan's 19th kill of the day and sixth of the third set finished the match.
Youngstown State will start Horizon League play on Thursday at Beeghly Center against Green Bay.
