YSU Sweeps Toledo to Highlight Split on Saturday

Sam Brown had 16 kills, and junior newcomer Lori Vanbeek added 12 to lead the Youngstown State volleyball team to a sweep of Toledo on Saturday afternoon at Savage Arena. The set scores were 25-13, 26-24 and 27-25.
The win over the Rockets completed YSU's three-match weekend in Toledo. The Penguins lost in straight sets earlier in the day to Portland, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21. Junior Val Jeffery was YSU's representative on the all-tournament team.
Brown had six kills in 10 attempts in the opening set against Toledo in leading the Penguins to a 25-13 win. YSU scored four of the first five points of the set, and a 10-1 run behind Jeffery's serve put Youngstown State ahead 15-5.
Toledo led for most of the second set, and the Rockets had three chances at set point to tie the match. Two kills from Vanbeek and one from libero Nikki Thompson tied the match at 24, and YSU extended its scoring run to five straight points on a Toledo attack error and another Vanbeek kill.
Youngstown State carried momentum into the third set and jumped out to an 8-1 lead after five consecutive kills by Brown and Vanbeek. Toledo responded with a seven-point run that gave it a 16-15, and the score was within two points the rest of the set. YSU's final deficit was at 19-18, and Vanbeek was part of the final two points that gave the Penguins the win. She combined on a block with Brown to make the score 26-25, and her kill finished it.
YSU led Portland by as many as five twice early in the first set, and it held a 13-9 lead after a kill by Morgan Tippie. The Pilots took their first lead at 15-14, and they did not trail the rest of the set. YSU got within 20-19 on a block by Tippie and Vanbeek, but Portland scored the final five points of the set.
YSU's only lead in the second set was at 10-9, and Portland outscored YSU 10-5 down the stretch to win 25-20. The Pilots scored eight of the final 12 points in the third set after the score was tied at 17-17.
Aly Ryan led the Penguins against the Pilots with eight kills.
Youngstown State's home opener is set for Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Saint Francis U.
