Penguins Pick Up 5-2 Victory at UC Riverside

Riverside, Calif. - The Youngstown State women's tennis team earned a hard-fought 5-2 victory over UC Riverside on Tuesday at UCR's Student Recreation Tennis Courts.
The Penguins (6-7) won three three-set singles matches to beat the Highlanders (4-9).
The Guins jumped out to a 1-0 lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. Marta Burak and Annina Brendel won 8-4 at No. 1 while Dominika Lackova and Victoria Ferry earn an 8-3 win at No. 3.
The lone YSU winner in straight sets was Sofia Macias Mendoza who beat VJ Ganesan, 6-3, 6-1.
Matches at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles all went three sets. In the three matches YSU won it dropped the first set while in the match it dropped, the Guins won the first set.
At No. 2, Brendel rallied after dropping her first set 6-1 to win the next two 6-3, 6-2 over Courtney Pattugalan. At No. 3, Nehel Sahni lost 6-4 to Karla Dulay in the opener before winning the next two sets 7-6, 6-0 to win the match. At No. 4, Julianna Heino fell behind a set after falling 6-2 to Tamillia Vaksman before winning the next two 7-5, 6-4.
At No. 1, Lackova won her first set against Chloe Pham 6-4, before losing the next two 6-3, 6-2. At No. 5, Ferry dropped a tough 7-5, 7-5 decision to Sophie El-Kara.
The Penguins play Gonzaga on Wednesday afternoon at Orange Coast College in Coasta Mesa, Calif.
