Penguins Battle Back But Fall to Hot-Shooting Detroit

The Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped a 77-67 decision to Detroit on Saturday night at the Beeghly Center. The Titans shot 69 percent for the game, including 80 percent in the first half.
YSU kept chipping away and took its first lead of the game at 50-49 on a Shawn Amiker basket at the 14:20 mark. However, Detroit answered 23 seconds later and the Penguins could never regain the lead.
Amiker finished the game with 19 points while D.J. Cole had 13 and Marcus Keene finished with 12. Leading the way for Detroit (13-17 and 6-9) was Juwan Howard Jr. who had a game-high 22 points.
After YSU grabbed its one-point lead, Detroit scored 10 straight points to grab a 59-50 lead following a basket by Brandan Kearney. After a Cameron Morse basket trimmed the deficit to seven, Detroit extended the lead back up to 15 points. YSU was able to pull within eight points, but could get no closer.
The Titans missed just 14 shots on the night while making 30. They were 9-of-14 from beyond the 3-point arc and 21-of-30 on two-point field goals. YSU shot 46.8 percent making 22-of-47 attempts and was 21-of-34 from the free-throw line.
Detroit made its first 12 field-goal attempts and 13 of its first 14, led by as many as 17 and owned a 30-15 advantage midway through the first half.
The Penguin rallied with an 11-0 run sparked by a pair of layup by Morse and a 3-pointer by Shaun Stewart to get within four, 30-26, 6:11 left.
Youngstown State also capitalized on 13 Detroit turnovers scoring 15 points off of the Titans' miscues.
After a 3-pointer by Howard, freshman Sidney Umude got the Penguins back within four, 35-31, with 3:12 left after a three-point play.
The Titans though went to the lockerroom with a 40-35 lead after shooting 80 percent (16-of-20) from the floor, including five 3-pointers.
The Penguins shot 48 percent from the floor despite going just 2-of-9 from 3-point range.
The Guins play their final regular-season road game when they visit Oakland, Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m.
