Penguins Drop First Horizon League Match at Detroit

Southfield, Mich. - The Youngstown State women's tennis team dropped its first Horizon League match of the year falling 4-3 to Detroit on Sunday evening at the Franklin Athletic Club.
The Penguins drop to 7-10 overall and 2-1 in the Horizon League while the Titans improve to 7-6 and 2-2.
The dual came down to No. 3 singles after the Guins earned wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles while Detroit won the doubles point and had wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
At No. 3, Annina Brendel dropped a marathon two-set match to Valery Kulikovskaya. Brendel dropped the first set 7-6 (7-0) and the second set 7-6 (7-2) in the clinching match.
At No. 1, Margarita Sadovnikova beat Viktoria Laskutova 6-3, 6-2. At No. 2, Marta Burak picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win against Irina Slizovskaya and at No. 4, Dominika Lackova defeated Anna Davydova, 6-3, 6-3. Lackova and Burak have each won five straight matches while the trio improved to 9-0 in Horizon League play.
At No. 5 singles, Nehel Sahni lost Julia Fernandes 6-3, 6-2 and at No. 6, Carolyn Jesko suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback to Elena Strakhova.
In doubles action, the Titans won at No. 2 and No. 3, but 8-1 scores, to earn the point.
YSU is next in action on Saturday at Cleveland State.
