Game Preview
• The Youngstown State men's basketball team returns home today host Thiel, Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Beeghly Center.
• Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. ET and can be heard on 570 AM WKBN and viewed on ESPN3.com.
About Thiel
• Thiel enters the game with a 3-4 overall record after defeating Bethany (W.Va.), 76-69, in overtime on Dec. 6. Leading the Tomcats is Eric Mallinger with 12 points per game and Khari Bess with 10.7 points per game.
The Thiel Series
• This is the 16th meeting between Youngstown State and Thiel in a series that dates back to 1927.
• Youngstown State owns an 11-4 advantage in the all-time series and has won 10 straight over the Tomcats.
• Last season, the Penguins defeated the Tomcats, 82-58, at the Beeghly Center.
Last Time Out
• The Penguins are coming off their second straight road win after a 87-79 win at South Dakota on Dec. 5.
• Senior Shawn Amiker and Bobby Hain each posted double-doubles and led four player scoring in double figures.
• Amiker scored a game-high 22 points with 12 rebounds while Hain added 16 points with 12 boards.
• Sophomore Marcus Keene scored 18 points with four 3-pointers made.
• Sophomore Jalon Plummer added 11 points.
Slocum In Elite Company
• Youngstown State Head Coach Jerry Slocum ranks among the best in the history of college basketball in terms of overall wins.
• Slocum ranks 37th all-time with 694 career victories eighth among active Division I coaches in all-time wins.
• Slocum is also just one of two NCAA Division I head coaches that are in their 40th year as a head coach. The other is Duke's Mike Krzyzewski.
Games Coached
• As of Dec. 5, Youngstown State Head Coach Jerry Slocum ranks third among active NCAA Division I coaches in games coached.
• Slocum, who has coached in 1,191 career games, is behind Duke's Mike Krzyzewski with 1,296 and Syracuse's Jim Boeheim with 1,274.
Keene Leads Nation
• With his 35 3-pointers made, sophomore Marcus Keene leads the nation in that category.
• He also ranks 14th nationally and leads the Horizon League with 3.5 3-pointers made per game.
Cole Among Nation's Leaders
• Senior DJ Cole has been one of the most productive point guards in the country.
• Cole ranks third in the nation with 60 total assists and his 6.0 assists per game ranks 19th.
Amiker Doubling Up
• Senior Shawn Amiker is off to great start for the Penguins this season.
• Amiker is averaging 13.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
• He also has three double-doubles and ranks fourth in the Horizon League in rebounding.
Hain Double the Trouble
• Junior Bobby Hain posted his fourth double-double of the season and the 13th of his career with a 16 points and 12 rebounds against South Dakota on Dec. 5.
• Hain's four double-doubles are tied for the Horizon League lead.
• Hain's 14 boards against Robert Morris on Dec. 2 are a Horizon League high and his 24 points against the Colonials marked his third 20-point performance of the year.
Keene Heating Up
• Sophomore Marcus Keene has been becoming Youngstown State's go-to player recently.
• Keene scored a career-high 29 points with five 3-pointers against Illinois State on Nov. 29.
• Keene hit the game-winning 3-pointer against UMKC on Nov. 26 and has scored at least 20 points in four of the last six games.
• Keene scored 21 against UMKC on Nov. 26, 28 against UNCG on Nov. 23 and 24 against Central Michigan on Nov. 18.
• Over the last eight games, Keene is averaging 20.8 points per game and has made 32 3-pointers.
Mr. 300
• With 12 assists against Longwood on Nov. 22, senior DJ Cole became the eighth player in school history to record at least 300 assists.
• Cole ranks sixth all-time with 328 assists.
• Cole also ranks fourth in career assists in YSU's Division I era.
