Women's Basketball

Women's Basketball Remains Unbeaten; Defeats Ohio Valley, 84-33

Four players scored in double figures, and a total of 12 different players scored, as the Youngstown State women's basketball team defeated Ohio Valley 84-33 on Friday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.

Leading the Penguins, who improve to 10-0, was freshman Krista Pietropola with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, including five 3-pointers.

Freshmen Kelley Wright and Morgan Olson scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, and junior Janae Jackson added 10 points. The Penguins bench scored 60 of the 83 points, and YSU outrebounded OVU, 53-32, for the game. The Penguins also made nine 3-pointers, led by Pietrapola's five and three from Wright. No YSU starter played more than 14 minutes.

Ohio Valley was led by Ghameerah McCullers 15 points. 

Youngstown State, which shot 44 percent from the field, held the Fighting Scotts to just 17 points in the first half and an overall field-goal percentage of 22.2.

The Penguins scored the first 18 points of the game just over five minutes into the game by making eight of their first 13 field-goal attempts.

Ohio Valley, which missed its first six shots, went on an 11-2 run to get within nine, 20-11, midway through the first half. That was as close as the contest would get the rest of the afternoon.

The Penguins answered with 10 straight on a jumper by Kelly Wright, 3-pointers by Pietropola and Jenna Hirsch and a put back by Latisha Walker to extend the lead back to 19, 30-11, with 6:53 remaining before halftime.

The Penguins pushed their lead 25 points, 36-11, on a jumper by Olson, and, after 3-pointer by OVU's Meghan Morrison, Pietropola buried her third 3-pointer of the half to give YSU a 39-14 lead at the 3:59 mark.

After Sarah Cash and McCullers traded baskets, the Penguins scored the final five points of the half to take a 46-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the first half, 11 of 13 players scored for the Penguins, who outrebounded the Fighting Scots, 28-16. The Guins' bench also scored 24 of the 46 first-half points.

Youngstown State will play at Pittsburgh on Sunday at 2 p.m.
