Penguins Beat Saint Francis U in Four Sets at YSU Invitational

The Youngstown State volleyball team hit a season-best .338 and got double digits in kills from three players to defeat Saint Francis U in four sets (25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14) on Friday morning in the first match of the YSU Invitational.
Alexis Egler led the Penguins with 14 kills, and she was joined in double figures by Missy Hundelt's 12 and Jackie Carlisle's 10 kills. Carlisle's 10 kills came on a .400 attack percentage, and Hundelt did not have an error in 31 attempts, which was good for a .387 clip.
Erika West finished with 16 digs, Aly Ryan had six blocks – all in the first two sets – and Casey D'Ambrose registered a match-high 47 assists.
The Penguins opened up an 18-12 lead in the opening set but had to battle late. The Red Flash cut the margin to 20-19 and trailed just 22-20 before YSU closed it out. Jenna Cavanaugh's kill made the score 21-19, and she teamed up with Egler for a big block to give the Penguins a set point chance at 24-20. After an SFU sideout, Egler put the set away with her fourth kill.
YSU hit .481 and never trailed in the second set to win 25-18. With the score tied at 3-3, the Penguins went on an 8-3 run to take an 11-6 advantage. YSU increased its lead to as many as 10 at 21-11 on a Ryan and D'Ambrose block. Lauren Thompson's kill made the score 24-16, and the Penguins got their final point of the set on a serving error.
Saint Francis U held YSU to a .150 attack percentage in the third set to win 25-23. YSU led 20-18 after a D'Ambrose ace, but SFU went on a 5-1 run to go up 23-21. The Penguins cut the margin to 23-22 and 24-23 before a Kayla Jeckell kill put the set away for Saint Francis U.
The loss seemed to ignite the Penguins for the fourth set when they hit .529 and converted on 78 percent of their sideout chances. Egler had a kill to tie the set at 5-5, and YSU went on to score five more points consecutively on her serve to go up 10-5. The Red Flash got no closer than two points the rest of the way, and YSU scored 11 of the final 13 points of the set to win the match.
Hannah Kutny had a match-high 16 kills, and Breanna Kochinsky led all players with 22 digs for Saint Francis U.
The Penguins will play Toledo later today at 7 p.m. in their second match at the YSU Invitational.
