Penguins Never Get On Track in Loss to Green Bay

The Youngstown State men's basketball team could never seize control against Green Bay on Sunday at the Beeghly Center falling to the Phoenix 71-54.
The Penguins (15-12 overall and 7-7 in the Horizon League) shot just 33.3 percent and made 5-of-25 3-point attempts (20 percent) in the contest. YSU had made 13 3-pointers in each of its last two contest. The Phoenix (15-12 and 9-5) shot 52.1 percent for the afternoon. UWGB made 25-of-48 shots from the field.
Freshman Bobby Hain led the way for YSU, which had four players finish in double figures. Hain scored 14 points while Kendrick Perry scored 13, Kamren Belin had 12 and Blake Allen contributed 11.
Leading the way for Green Bay was Keifer Sykes who had a game-high 24 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and was 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Alec Brown had 16 points while Jordan Fouse finished with 10 .
YSU overcome an eight-point halftime deficit to take a 36-35 lead on a 3-pointer by Belin at the 16:35 mark. However Brown had a dunk a minute-and-a-half later and that seemed to spark the Phoenix.
The Penguins trimmed the margin to 40-38 on a Hain basket at 13:51 before UWGB scored 10 of the next 12 points. From that point on, the closest YSU could get was 51-46 following a steal and layup by Allen. Green Bay answered Allen's layup with seven straight points and after going ahead 56-46 with 5:11 left, never let the margin slip under double digits.
The first half featured five ties and five lead changes before the Phoenix scored the final eight points to go in front 33-25 at halftime.
YSU went the final 2:47 without a field goal while Green Bay made three of its final four shots.
The Penguins came out with good energy grabbing an 8-2 advantage just 3:36 into the game, but after that point the opening frame was back-and-forth until Green Bay's run in the final 2:22.
Hain scored 10 points in the opening half, but the Penguins made just 10 field goals, including two from behind the 3-point arc.
The Penguins play their final regular-season home game next Saturday against Central Michigan. Tipoff for the contest against the Chippewas at the Beeghly Center is set for 7:05 p.m.
