Men's Basketball Drops High-Scoring Affair to Detroit, 88-77

Detroit, Mich. – Junior Kendrick Perry scored a team-high 22 points and junior Kamren Belin made a career-high six 3-pointers but the Youngstown State men's basketball team came up short in an 88-77 loss to Detroit on Friday night.
Belin finished with 19 points and senior Damian Eargle posted his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Eargle also swatted a season-high seven shots.
With the loss, the Penguins fall to 13-9 overall and 5-4 in the Horizon League while Detroit improves to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in the league.
The Penguins made a season-high 11 3-pointers - six by Belin, two by Perry, who scored at least 20 points for the sixth time this season, two by freshman Ryan Weber and one by senior Blake Allen.
Youngstown State also outrebounded the Titans, 38-33, but committed 20 turnovers that produced 23 points for Detroit.
The Titans were led by senior Nick Minnerath with 27 points and junior Ray McCallum with 23 points and six assists.
The Titans broke a 44-44 tie with a 7-0 run to take a 51-44 lead with 16:42 remaining. Belin hit a 3-pointer and Allen made layup to get back within two, 51-49, at the 15:05 mark.
Detroit pushed its lead back to nine points with just over eight minutes left, but the Penguins were able to cut the deficit down to five after 3's by Belin - the last at the 4:21 mark that made the score 70-65.
The Penguins would not get any closer the rest of the way.
The first half was fast and furious with a combined 82 points scored and a combinedfield-goal percentage of 50.8. The Penguins outshot the Titans 51.7 percent to 48.6 percent and won the rebounding battle, 16-15.
There were 11 lead changes and one tie in the first 20 minutes and the teams combined for 12 made 3-pointers.
The Titans used a 11-0 run early in the first half to take a 14-5 lead before the Penguins charged back to get within two, 14-12, with 13:04 to go.
The Titans were able to rebuilt its lead back to seven, 19-12, but the Penguins answered with 12-2 run that featured two 3-pointers by Ryan Weber and Kamren Belin to take a 24-22 edge at the 8:34 mark.
Seven lead changes later the Titans went into the lockerroom with a 42-40 lead.
The Penguins visit Cleveland State, Tuesday, Feb. 5. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
