Men's Basketball Seeks Slocum's 100th YSU Victory at UMKC

The Youngstown State men's basketball team goes for Head Coach Jerry Slocum's 100th victory at the school when it visits UMKC, Saturday, Dec. 7.
• Tipoff is set for 1:05 p.m. EST at the Swinney Recreation Center in Kansas City, Mo.
• The game can be heard on 570 WKBN-AM and iHeartRadio.
Last Time Out
• The Penguins turned in a solid team effort en route to an 84-76 win over Robert Morris on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
• The Penguins dished out 23 assists and turned the ball over just three times.
• Senior Kendrick Perry scored a game-high 27 points with eight assists to lead four players scoring in double figures.
• Junior DJ Cole scored a career-high 19 points with six rebounds and six assists against the Colonials.
• Senior Kamren Belin postred 14 points, while sophomore Ryan Weber scored 12 points with six rebounds and five assists.
The UMKC Series
• This is the 21st meeting between Youngstown State and UMKC in a series that dates back to 1989.
• It is the first meeting in nearly 10 years. The last time YSU played UMKC was Dec. 22, 2003, at the Beeghly Center.
• The Penguins own a 13-7 advantage in the all-time series, including a 73-65 victory in the last meeting.
• The Penguins have won 10 of the last 13 contests, including seven straight from Feb. 6, 1997 to Jan. 20, 2000.
Scouting UMKC
• UMKC enters the game with a 1-6 overall record and is coming off a 90-62 loss to defending national champion Louisville on Dec. 4.
• The Kangaroos also lost to Horizon League member Milwaukee, 84-79, on Nov. 30.
• Leading the Kangaroos is Martez Harrison with 17 points per game.
• Nelson Kirksey and Trinity Hall are also in double figures with 11.6 and 11.1 points per game, respectively.
• UMKC averages 3.9 3-pointers made per game and shoots 23.9 percent behind the arc.

Slocum Going For 100
• With a win over UMKC, Head Coach Jerry Slocum will pick up his 100th victory at Youngstown State.
• Slocum will be just the second coach in YSU men's basketball history to reach 100 wins.
• It will also mark the fourth school which Slocum has won at least 100 games.
• Slocum won 199 at Nyack (1975-87), 203 at Geneva (1987-96) and 179 at Gannon (1996-2005).
Cole Hits For Career High
• After missing a game and a half, with a sprained ankle, junior DJ Cole returned in big fashion.
• Cole scored a career-high 19 points with six rebounds and six assists in the 84-76 win over Robert Morris on Dec. 4.
• It was just Cole's second double figure scoring game this season.
• His previous career high was 18 against Milwaukee on Feb. 15, 2013.
Assist Me, Please
• Against Robert Morris on Dec. 4, the Penguins were plenty generous with one another.
• The Guins dished out 23 assists to just three turnovers.
• Six players recorded an assist and three tallied at least five.
• Senior Kendrick Perry led with eight, while DJ Cole and Ryan Weber had six and five, respectively.
• As a team, the Penguins lead the Horizon League with 17.7 assists per game and with a 1.7 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Perry Now 11th
• With 195 points this season, senior Kendrick Perry now ranks 11th all-time on the YSU scoring list with 1,504 points.
• He is also just the 11th player in school history to reach 1,500 career points.
• He needs 28 more points to move into 10th place on the all-time scoring list.
• Perry also needs 31 more points to move into the top 50 all-time in Horizon League scoring.
Slocum In Elite Company
• Youngstown State Head Coach Jerry Slocum ranks among the best in the history of college basketball in terms of overall wins.
• Slocum ranks 35th all-time with 680 career victories and surpassed Denny Crum, who had 675 career victories.
• He also ranks sixth among active Division I coaches in all-time wins.
KP In the League
• Senior Kendrick Perry is in the top four in four key Horizon League statistical categories
• He leads the league in steals (2.9 spg), assist-to-turnover ratio (4.2), assists (5.0 apg).
• He ranks fourth in scoring (19.5 ppg).
30 For 30
• Senior Kendrick Perry scored a season-high 32 points against Austin Peay on Nov. 30.
• He became the first player in the Horizon League to score at least 30 points on multiple occasions this season.
• The 32-point effort was just two points shy of his career high.
• It also marked the fifth time in his career Perry scored at least 30 points in a game.
Mighty Keene
• Freshman Marcus Keene made the most of his first career start against Austin Peay on Nov. 30.
• Keene nearly missed a double-double with 12 points and a career-high nine assists.
Belin Nets Career High
• Senior Kamren Belin turned in the best performance of his career against Kent State on Nov. 27.
• Belin scored a game-high 32 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor and 14-of-15 shooting from the free-throw line.
• Belin made four 3-pointers, grabbed seven rebounds and recorded two blocks and three steals.
Two for 30
• Kamren Belin's 32 points against Kent State marks the first time since 2006-07 that two players scored at least 30 points in a game in the same season.
• Fellow senior Kerry Perry scored 31 points in against Eastern Kentucky on Nov. 10.
• Quin Humphrey and Keston Roberts each scored more than 30 points in game in 2006-07.
Penguins Set Rebounding Mark
• YSU set a single-game rebounding record with 66 boards against Westminster on Nov. 23.
• It broke the record of 64 set in 1987.
• The last time the Penguins recorded at least 60 rebounds was against Wilberforce on Jan. 11, 2011.
Cool Hands Cole
• Junior guard DJ Cole has been sure handed when handling the rock.
• Cole, who is averaging 4.1 assists per game, ranks second in the league with a 3.1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
• He also ranks sixth in the league in assists per game.
Hain Making Mark
• Sophomore Bobby Hain is proving he is one of the top young players in the Horizon League.
• Hain, who already has two double-doubles this year, ranks fourth in the league with 7.2 rebounds per game.
• He is tied for 11th with a .500 field-goal percentage and ranks 23rd in the league with 10.8 points per game.
KP Nets Steals Mark
• Kendrick Perry is Youngstown State's all-time steals leader with 199.
• Perry broke the record of 182 set by Bruce Alexander between 1979-83.
Perry Moving Up Assists, 3's, FT Charts
• Not only is senior Kendrick Perry YSU's all-time steals leader and climbing the all-time scoring list, he is also moving up the career assists, career 3-pointers made, and free-throws made charts.
• Perry ranks for fourth all-time with 415 career assists, fourth with 360 made free throws and sixth with 158 career 3-pointers made.
• Perry should also become the school's all-time leader in minutes played.
• Her currently ranks fourth with 3,342 minutes, and the school record is 3,689 held by Quin Humphrey from 2003-07.
