Volleyball Drops Four-Setter to Loyola

Youngstown -- Loyola got 22 kills from Anna Eytchison and hit .279 collectively to defeat the Youngstown State volleyball team in four sets (25-16, 25-23, 16-25, 25-19) on Saturday afternoon at Beeghly Center.
Eytchison, a senior transfer from Dayton, had her 22 kills in 44 attempts while posting a .364 attack percentage. Freshman newcomer Kathleen Vogel added 13 kills, 10 of which came on 12 swings in the first two sets.
Missy Hundelt and Shannon Watson had 11 kills apiece, and Hundelt added 12 digs for Youngstown State.
YSU hit .303 in the second set and .417 in the third, but the Penguins hit .138 in the first and negative-.024 in the fourth.
Loyola upped its record to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in Horizon League play in its much-improved season. YSU dropped to 11-7 overall and 1-3 in conference contests.
YSU scored the first three points of the first set, but three straight Penguin attack errors allowed Loyola to tie the score at 3-3. YSU led 4-3, but Loyola went on a 7-1 to go up 10-5 and led by at least three the rest of the set.
YSU jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the second set, and the Penguins led by as many as four at 12-8 on an Alexis Egler kills. Loyola tied the score at 12 and took its first lead at 17-16 on a kill by Eytchison. YSU scored two straight points on a serving error and Jackie Carlisle kill, and the Penguins led again at 19-18 on a Watson kill. Loyola scored five of the next six points to go up 23-20, and it got a side out to go up 24-22 on a close call near the back line on a Hundelt attempt. An Egler kill made the score 24-23, but Vogel came up with a kill on Loyola's second set point.
After an Eytchison kill gave Loyola the first point of the third set, YSU scored three straight points and led the rest of the way. An Eytchison error allowed YSU to go up 9-4, and the Penguins eventually built an 18-9 lead following a 5-1 run. An error by Nichole Riedel gave YSU its largest lead at 23-13, and the Penguins went on to win 25-16.
Loyola took the early lead in the fourth set at 8-4 following back-to-back Watson errors. YSU came out of a time out and answered with a 6-1 run to take a 10-9 lead on a Riedel error. YSU led 11-10 on a block by Aly Ryan and Watson, but that was the Penguins final lead. Loyola scored three straight points and led 13-11 on kill by setter Brittany Brown, and an ace by Egler tied the set at 13. From there, Loyola scored three straight points and led by as many as four (19-15) on a Laura Purcell kill. YSU was able to get the margin to within 20-18 on a blocking error, but Loyola scored four straight points to go up 24-18. Eytchison had two kills during the run, and Purcell finished the match with her 11th kill.
Youngstown State will head back on the road to play at Wright State and at Valparaiso next weekend. The Penguins will play at Wright State on Friday at 7 p.m., and they'll play Valpo at 6 p.m. Eastern on Saturday.
