Cavanaugh's 19 Kills Not Enough as YSU Falls in Five at Green Bay

Green Bay, Wis. -- Despite a career-high 19 kills from Jenna Cavanaugh and three Penguins with at least 20 digs, the Youngstown State volleyball team dropped a five-set match at Green Bay on Saturday evening at the Kress Events Center.
Cavanaugh's 19 kills were the most in the match, and the junior middle blocker posted a .472 attack percentage. Green Bay won the first and third sets 25-22 and claimed the fifth 15-12. YSU won the second set 25-17 and the fourth 25-23.
"Jenna was unstoppable tonight, and Lexi (Egler) also had a very solid night," YSU head coach Mark Hardaway said. "Green Bay played great defense and was very disciplined in its blocking, and that made the difference tonight."
"After five weekends on the road, we are looking forward to playing at home next weekend."
Egler added 15 kills and a career-best 22 digs, and she was joined in the 20-plus digs category by Erika West and Missy Hundelt. Hundelt also had 15 kills, and Shannon Watson finished with 11.
Green Bay finished with 15 blocks, including eight by Leah Van Zeeland. Van Zeeland added 18 kills, and three other Phoenix players had at least 12 kills.
The match featured 31 ties and nine lead changes, and each set had at least one lead change and one tie.
There were 11 ties and three lead changes in the first set before Green Bay went on a 4-0 run to go up 19-17. YSU led by as many as 14 in the second set behind six kills from Cavanaugh and four from Hundelt.
The margin was never greater than four in the third set in Green Bay's 25-22 win, and YSU held off Green Bay in the fourth to win 25-23.
Cavanaugh started the fifth set with three straight kills to force a Green Bay time out, but the Phoenix scored nine of the next 10 points to go ahead 9-4. YSU came back to get within one twice at 10-9 and 11-10, but the Penguins were never able to catch the Phoenix. Cavanaugh's 19th kill saved one match point, but Van Zeeland finished the match with her own kill.
Youngstown State will play its Horizon League home opener on Friday against UIC at 7 p.m.
