Volleyball Falls at Cleveland State in Regular-Season Finale

Cleveland, Ohio -- Cleveland State hit .368 and collected 52 kills as a team to defeat the Youngstown State volleyball team 25-12, 25-18, 25-16 on Thursday evening at Woodling Gymnasium.
YSU's Missy Hundelt had 11 kills, eight digs and three blocks, and Erika West posted a match-best 19 digs. Cleveland State was paced by Kara Koch and Marie Frease, who combined for 29 kills and just one error in 54 attempts. Koch had 18 kills and 12 digs while five Vikings finished with at least 11 digs in the three-set match.
The Penguins finished the regular season 15-13 overall and 5-9 in Horizon League play. They will enter next week's tournament as the sixth seed and play Loyola, UIC or Valparaiso.
Cleveland State led by as many as five in the early part of the first set before a kill by YSU's Alexis Egler cut the deficit to 9-6. The Vikings then scored the next nine points behind Nikki Holmes' serve, which included aces on four of five points in one stretch.
A Hundelt kill had the Penguins within 10-9 in the second set, but kills by Frease and Koch started a four point run for Cleveland State. The Vikings led by as many as five before YSU cut it to 20-17 on another Hundelt kill. Cleveland State outscored YSU 5-1 over the final six points.
Cleveland State then jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third set en route to closing out the match.
