Cleveland State Sweeps Volleyball

Youngstown -- Cleveland State hit .410 as a team and took advantage of Youngstown State playing shorthanded in a sweep of the Penguins (25-13, 25-14, 25-14) on Friday evening at Beeghly Center.
The league-leading Vikings improved to 14-6 overall and 6-1 in Horizon League play while YSU finished the first round of conference play at 12-9 overall and 2-5 in league matches. The Penguins were playing without junior right-side hitter Missy Hundelt, who ranks fourth in the league in kills per set.
Conference player-of-the-year candidate Kara Koch had 11 kills, and Marie Frease added nine for the Vikings. Cleveland State played well defensively as well, posting six blocks and 48 digs in the three sets.
Alexis Egler led YSU with six kills, and Jenna Cavanaugh and Nichele Johnson added five kills apiece. Cavnaugh hit .364 and Johnson hit .375, but the Penguins hit .061 as a unit. All five of Johnson's kills came in the fifth set.
YSU libero Erika West had 11 of YSU's 29 digs.
YSU committed 19 hitting errors in the match, and just six of those came on blocks. The Penguins also had eight serving errors.
YSU will continue its three-match homestand next week with contests against Green Bay and Milwaukee. The Penguins will play the Phoenix on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Panthers on Saturday at 2 p.m.
