Volleyball Falls in Three to Cleveland State

Youngstown -- The Youngstown State volleyball team was competitive with Cleveland State for most of the match, but the Penguins struggled with ball control in a three-set loss to the Vikings on Friday evening at Beeghly Center.
The Penguins lost the first set 25-22 and the third 25-20, but they dropped the middle set 25-11.
Sophomore Missy Hundelt had nine kills in her first action in two weeks, and Jackie Carlisle added eight kills. Setter Casey D'Ambrose added 12 digs.
Kara Koch had 18 kills, 11 more than any of her teammates, to lead the Vikings.
There were eight ties and four lead changes in the opening set, and YSU scored five straight points to turn a 6-2 deficit into a 7-6 lead. Neither team led by more than three the rest of the set, and the score was tied for the final time when Hundelt's ace made the score 18-18. Hundelt had five kills in the first set.
Cleveland State had six aces in the second set, and Jordan Goad's serve built the Vikings a 17-1 lead. YSU fought to make the score 25-11, and the Penguins carried some momentum into the third set. YSU led 7-4 following back-to-back Koch errors, and the Penguins led 15-14 after back-to-back Hundelt kills. The score was tied 19-19 following a Carlisle kill, but Cleveland State scored five of the final six points. Marie Frease had a big solo block of Hundelt to start the run.
Youngstown State's next match is Oct. 1 against Milwaukee. First serve against the Panthers is set for 2 p.m.
