Siena Rallies Past Volleyball in Five Sets in Season Opener

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Siena rallied from two sets down and overcame 25 kills from Youngstown State's Missy Hundelt to defeat the Penguins volleyball team 20-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-12 on Friday at the Syracuse Big Orange Tournament.
Hundelt's 25 kills were the most by a YSU player since Ruth Boscaljon had 28 against Canisius in 2006.
The Penguins never trailed in the first set and had to rally to win the second set. Siena took the third and fourth and scored the final six points of the fifth set.
Sophomore Jackie Carlisle (Hubbard, Ohio) added a career-high 12 kills, and sophomore newcomer Erika West (Painesville, Ohio) led all players with 26 digs. Hundelt (St. Charles, Mo.) added 10 digs in her sixth career double-double.
After Carlisle, Alexis Egler (Clarkston, Mich.) and Jenna Cavanaugh (Cold Spring, Ky.) had three kills apiece in the first set, Hundelt matched the trio herself in the second with nine kills. The Penguins trailed by five on three occasions before knotting the score at 18 on a Carlisle finish. The Saints pulled back ahead 23-20, but the Penguins scored the final five points of the set behind Hundelt's serve.
Siena turned the same trick in the third set, rallying from a 23-20 deficit. Rachel Gambow (Hartville, Ohio) missed on her serve, and back-to-back attack errors by Hundelt tied the score. Casey D'Ambrose (Addison, Ill.) was then charged with a bad set, and Egler had an attack error on set point.
Siena built a 19-13 lead and held on once YSU scored five straight points, and the Saint scored the final six points of the fifth set. Hundelt had six kills in the set, three of which accounted for YSU's first three points of the set. Her final kill made the score 12-9, but four attack errors and two kills from Siena's Taylor Akana sealed the Guins' fate.
Akana, who ranked 12th nationally with 4.48 kills per set in 2010, had 20 kills and 20 digs for the Saints.
The Penguins outblocked the Saints 12-9, and Cavanaugh was part of eight of those before leaving in the fourth set with an injury. The Penguins hurt themselves with 18 service errors.
YSU will play host Syracuse at 12:30 p.m. and Sacred Heart at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
