Guins Tie Single-Season 3-Point Record in 86-76 Loss at Cleveland State

Cleveland, Ohio -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team tied the school record for most 3-pointers made in a single-season, but could not overcome a 41-point, 20-rebound performance by Cleveland State's Norris Cole in an 86-76 loss on Saturday afternoon at the Wolstein Center.
The Guins made 10 3-pointers against the Vikings to put their season total to 199, which ties the mark set by the 1997-98 squad. It also marks the eighth time this year the Guins have made at least 10 3-pointers in a game.
Sophomore Damian Eargle led four Penguins scoring in double figures with 22 points, including 13 in the second half, and junior Ashen Ward posted 15 points and seven rebounds. Senior Vytas Sulskis scored 11 points and junior DuShawn Brooks added 10 points.
The Guins fall to 8-17 overall and 2-13 in the Horizon League while the Vikings improve to 22-5 overall and 11-4 in the league.
The Guins trailed by seven points, 53-46, with 13:12 left in the game but Ward and Sulskis each drained 3-pointers and freshman Kendrick Perry converted a free throw to knot the game at 53-53, at the 12:10 mark.
Sulskis made two free throws and Tre Brewer hit a jumper to finish off an 11-0 run to give the Guins a 57-53 lead with just over 11 minutes to play.
After five more lead changes, Brooks made two charity tosses to tie the game at 65-65 at the 8:06 mark.
Cole, who made 11-of-22 from the field, drilled a 3-pointer and Aaron Pogue made two free tthrows to give the Vikings a five-point lead, 70-65.
Ward, though, brought the Guins back within two with a triple at the 6:14 mark.
Cole responded again with another 3-pointer then grabbed an offensive rebound and subsequent layup extended the Vikings lead to seven points, 75-68, with 3:54 to go.
Sulskis nailed a 3-pointer to get back within four, but the Guins could not get any closer as the Vikings made six of the last eight free throws to seal the victory.
In the first half, the Guins were able to build an 11-point lead, 31-20, with 5:26 left before the half thanks in part to a .469 first-half, field-goal percentage.
Leading by just four, 24-20, Sulskis hit a triple and Eargle and Ward each hit jumpers to give the Guins their largest lead of the game.
CSU used a 14-5 run to close out the half to cut the Guins lead to just two, 36-34. Cole scored the final nine points for the Vikings.
The Vikings shot 60 percent from the field in second half compared to just 37.5 percent in the first half.
The Guins visit Detroit, Wednesday, Feb. 16, in their final regular season road game of the year. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Detroit, Mich.
