Career Highs For Brewer, Perry Not Enough in 84-71 Loss at Loyola

Chicago, Ill. -- Freshman Kendrick Perry and junior Tre Brewer each posted career scoring highs but the Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped an 84-71 decision to Loyola on Thursday evening at the Gentile Center.
Perry scored a team-high 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor, including three 3-pointers, with seven assists and five rebounds. Brewer scored all 17 of his points in the second half and connected on 7-of-13 shooting from the field.
The Penguins fall to 7-13 overall and 1-9 in the Horizon League while the Ramblers improve to 13-8 overall and 4-6 in the league.
The Ramblers used a 20-7 run midway through the second half to turn a two-point edge, 47-45, into an insurmountable 15-point lead, 67-52, with 7:42 left.
The Penguins were able to trim the deficit down to seven, 67-60, with 4:50 left but were unable to get any closer.
After trailing by five, 35-30, at the half, the Guins scored seven of the first nine points of the second half to tie at the game at 37-37 after a layup by senior Vytas Sulskis with 17:10 left.
Sophomore Blake Allen responed to a 3-pointer by Loyola's Geoff McCammon, who scored a game-high 27 points, with his own trey to knot the game at 40-40 with 16:23 to go, but McCammon answered with another 3-pointer and two free throws then Ben Averkamp added a layup to extend the Ramblers' lead to 47-40 with 14:46 to go.
A layup by Perry and a 3-pointer by junior Ashen Ward with 13:42 left brought the Penguins within two, 47-45, before the Ramblers run.
Perry,who scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half, scored the Guins' first 10 points of the game before Allen hit a 3-pointer at the 13:35 mark to give YSU a 13-12 advantage, its last lead of the game.
The Penguins shot 44.6 percent from the field but just 50 percent from the free-throw line while the Ramblers connected on 95 percent from the charity stripe and 46 percent from the field.
The Ramblers also outrebounded the Guins 42-33 and outscored the Guins bench 42-17.
YSU continues its swing through Chicago against UIC, Saturday, Jan. 29, at 4 p.m.
