Eargle Scores 20 as Penguins Come Up Short Against CSU

YSU (7-10 and 1-6) had just scored five consecutive points to cut an eight-point deficit down to 32-29 on a fastbreak bucket by Eargle.
After CSU's Tim Kamczyc scored 12 seconds later, Tre Harmon scored the next nine points and Jeremy Montgomery drained a 3-pointer with 12:06 remaining stretching the advantage to 46-29. Devonte Maymon's 3-pointer with 11:55 remaining stopped the run.
The Penguins kept fighting back and pulled within 53-45 with 3:07 left on an Eargle bucket. But that was as close as they could get outside of pulling within eight in the final 25 seconds.
Maymon was the only other Penguin to reach double figures added 12, all on four 3-pointers. Norris Cole, the Horizon League's leading scorer, made just five field goals, but was 9-of-10 from the free-throw line to finish with 21 points. Harmon had 16 while Montgomery chipped in a dozen.
For the game, YSU shot 36 percent making 18-of-50 attempts. The Guins shot 54.5 percent in the second half. CSU was limited to 32.7 percent, but made 20-of-23 (87 percent) from the free-throw line.
Neither team was able to getting offensively in the first half as the defenses ruled the action.
YSU was 6-of-28 (21.4 percent) while the Vikings connected on just 28.6 percent (8-of-28) from the field. The Penguins drained their first 3-pointer of the game then proceeded to miss their final six.
Both teams combined to commit 11 turnovers in the half while each team had eight points of those giveaways.
The Penguins came out with energy and scored the first seven points of the game to go ahead 7-0 by the 18:21 mark. However in the final 18-plus minutes, the Guins were only able to score seven points.
CSU answered with nine consecutive points to go ahead 9-7 with 14:01 left before the Guins tied the game on an Eargle basket.
CSU was able to make a mini-run before the break. Leading 13-12 with 3:15 left , the Vikings made two 3-pointer in the final portion of the half after missing their first five tries in the opening 18 minutes.
YSU's lone two points during the run came on a basket by DuShawn Brooks which pulled it within 16-14 with 1:45 left. CSU scored the final five points to go on top 21-14 at the break.
The Penguins return to action on Thursday night when they host Wright State. Tipoff at the Beeghly Center is set for 7:45 p.m. following the YSU women's game against the Raiders.
