Three Score in Double Figures as Penguins Roll Past Wilberforce

The Youngstown State men's basketball team stepped out of Horizon League action to defeat Wilberforce 86-51 on Tuesday night at the Beeghly Center.
The Penguins played a strong final 30 minutes outscoring the Bulldogs by 34 points after leading 15-14 at the 10:43 mark of the first half.
The victory improves Youngstown State to 7-9 overall while the Bulldogs, an NAIA member, are now 2-12. YSU has now won seven of eight home games during the 2010-11 campaign and has won all three meetings against the Bulldogs.
Leading the offensive effort on the evening were three Penguins who scored in double figures. Leading the way was sophomore forward Damian Eargle who scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Junior Devonte Maymon finished with 15 points while Kendrick Perry had a solid all-around evening with 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
For the game, YSU attempted 81 shots and made 32 for a shooting percentage of 39.5. The Guins drained 8-of-33 3-pointers and were 14-of-26 from the free-throw line. The Guins committed just five turnovers on the night. YSU dominated the glass by a 61-42 margin. Leading the way was DuShawn Brooks who had 11 while Perry added 10.
In the second half, Wilberforce pulled to within 40-28 two minutes into the half, but YSU scored seven consecutive points to push the lead out to 19 points in a 57-second span.
YSU continued the onslaught building the lead to 37 points (71-34) on a Brooks basket with 8:32 remaining.
It took the first nine minutes of the game for the Guins to find their shooting touch. YSU, which was leading by one, scored 13 of the next 15 points to go in front 28-16 in just three minutes and never looked back.
Leading 15-14 at the 10:43 mark, Kendrick Perry found Ashen Ward open in the corner for a 3-pointer. Just over a minute later, Maymon found the bullseye from 3-point range to put YSU up 21-14. On the ensuing possession, Ward dished the ball down low to Dan Boulder who converted inside the paint giving the Guins a 23-14 cushion.
Wilberforce broke the string on a Chris Olafioye jumper, but the Guins responded with a Perry basket and another three by Maymon to go in front 28-16.
The Penguins led 39-26 at halftime. For the half, YSU attempted 40 shots, making 16 for a 40 percent shooting percentage. The Guins drained 6-of-19 3-point attempts, with Maymon drilling three from deep. Youngstown State had 12 assists on its 16 field goals.
YSU dominated the boards grabbing 27 to the Bulldogs 19. Both teams combined to make just nine turnovers, three of which came from the Penguins.
Eargle scored 11 in the opening 20 minutes to go along with seven rebounds. For Wilberforce, Tremayne Scott had 13 points and made six of the Bulldogs' field goals.
The Penguins continue their four-game homestand when they host in-state rival Cleveland State on Saturday. Tipoff at the Beeghly Center is set for 7:05 p.m.
