
Cross Country Opens 2010 Season at Duquesne Duals

The Youngstown State cross country squads opened the 2010 season at the Duquesne Duals on Saturday morning at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh. The men's team went 5-4 while Samantha Hamilton placed seventh in the women's competition.
"The team improved quite a bit from last year's first cross country meet," Head Coach Brian Gorby. "It was a great start for such a young team."
Women's Recap
Sophomore Samantha Hamilton finished seventh to lead the Youngstown State women's cross country team on Saturday at the season-opening Duquesne Duals in Pittsburgh. Hamilton finished with a time of 18:35 to lead the way for the Guins.
She was followed by sophomore Katherine Digby, who ran a college personal best of 19:41 for a 36th place finish, and freshman Anna Pompeo, who finished two places behind Digby with a career personal-best time of 19:47. Freshman Rachel Huddle (48th) and redshirt freshman Nelly Yegon (63rd) rounded out the top five with times of 20:10 and 20:42, respectively.
In the dual-meet format, YSU earned wins over Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon.

Men's Recap
The Youngstown State cross country squad posted a 5-4 mark at the season-opening Duquesne Duals which were held Saturday at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh. With a tight pack running, YSU earned wins over St. Louis, Canisius, Carnegie Mellon, St. Vincent and St. Bonaventure.
The YSU men's team also posted strong times on Saturday, as there was less than a 70 second gap between the Guins' first and fifth runners.
Leading the way for the men was senior Joe Copploe who finished 28th with a time of 26.49. Other Penguin finishers in the top 50 were Jim Ramson at 31st with at ime of 26:53, Scott Denham in 41st at 27:15, Jake Dialesandro at 44th with a 27:20 and Jake Lape had a time of 27:48 finishing 65th. Lance Ronghi also ran a personal best on the 8k course with a time of 28:00 (74th).
YSU suffered dual defeats to Duquesne, Xavier, St. Joseph's (Pa.) and Pittsburgh.
The Penguins are back in action on Sept. 9 when they compete at the Akron Quadrangular.
