Men's Basketball Battles NC State But Falls, 67-50

Raleigh, N.C. -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team gave NC State all it could handle for 36 minutes before the physical Atlantic Coast Conference team overtook the Penguins for a 67-50 victory at the RBC Center on Thursday evening.
Senior Vytas Sulskis posted his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead Guins, who fall to 5-5 on the season. Junior Devonte Maymon added 10 points. NC State improves to 6-3.
Youngstown State allowed just 18 made field goals, but NC State convertered 27-of-40 free throws, including 18-of-26 in the second half.
The Penguins dominated the first half leading the entire 20 minutes and by as many as 18 points, 31-13, with 3:38 left after a DuShawn Brooks 3-pointer.
The Wolfpack, who made just six field goals in the first half, scored eight straight points to cut the Penguins' lead to 10, 31-21 with just over a minute to play before halftime.
Sophomore Blake Allen, however, nailed a 3-pointer with one second remaining to push the Guins' advantage to 13, 34-21, at the intermission.

A 3-pointer by NC State's Lorenzo Brown to start the second half cut the lead to 10, 34-24, but junior Ashen Ward hit a jumper at the 17:39 mark to extend the Penguins' lead back to 12, 36-24.
NC State used a 13-1 run over the next five minutes to tie the game at 37-37 with 12:24 left.
An old-fashioned three-point play by Sulskis regained the edge for the Guins, 40-37, at the 11:52 mark.
After a basket and two free throws by NCSU's Ryan Harrow put the Wolfpack back up 41-40, another three-point play by Sulskis and a layup by Dan Boudler gave the Guins their last lead of the game, 45-42, at the 9:08 mark.
The Wolfpack scored the next six points to build a three-point edge, 48-45, but Damian Eargle's jumper at the 7:16 mark made it a one-point game, 48-47.
NC State outscored the Penguins 19-3 to close out the game.
Youngstown State visits Kent State, Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m.
