Hamilton Breaks School Record, Finishes 44th at Great Lakes Regional

Sophomore runner Samantha Hamilton finished a successful 2010 cross country campaign by becoming YSU's newest record holder Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Oakland, Mich. With a time of 21:45, Hamilton now owns the fastest time in school history for the women's 6k race.

Hamilton, who has been the Guins' top runner all season, finished in 44th place in a field of 231 runners from the Big Ten, Horizon League and Mid-Atlantic Conferences. Her finish is the second-highest in school history at the Regional meet while her time of 21:45 bested the previous mark of 21:47 set by Lisa Davies at the Penn State National Cross Country Meet in 2003. Prior to Saturday's meet, Hamilton was third on YSU's All-time list for her 6k time of 22:13 that she ran at the Bowling Green Invitational on Oct. 16 of this year.
Sophomore Nelly Yegon came in second for the Penguins, finishing with a time of 23:18. She was followed by freshman Anna Pompeo and sophomore Katherine Digby, who finished with times of 24:32 and 24:40, respectively. Senior Kayla Witmer rounded out YSU's top five with her time of 24:53. Freshman Rachel Huddle ran the 6k in 25:19, and senior Kelcie Witmer finished the course in 27:37.
With 773 points, the Guins placed 27th overall; they beat Horizon League teams Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State, Valparaiso, Cleveland State, Detroit and Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Men's Recap
On the men's side, members of this year's senior class made up YSU's top five runners. Jim Ramson led the way for the Guins with a 10k time of 33:27 while Joe Copploe finished seven seconds behind him. Scott Denham and Jake Dialesandro finished the course in 34:16 and 34:26, respectively, as Jake Lape ran in 34:42. Freshman Eric Rupe ran a time of 35:04, and sophomore Lance Ronghi completed the race in 36:54.
The Penguins scored 819 points, defeating Horizon League teams Valparaiso and Wisconsin-Green Bay.
