Koch's 17 Kills Pace Cleveland State Over Volleyball

Youngstown -- Kara Koch had 17 of Cleveland State's 48 kills as the Vikings defeated the Youngstown State volleyball team in three sets – 25-13, 25-13, 25-18 – on Friday at Beeghly Center.
The Vikings improved to 19-4 overall and 9-3 in Horizon League play with the victory. Amy Benz added 13 kills for CSU, which hit .320 as a team.
Tasha Reid had six kills, and Haley Kapferer posted four blocks for Youngstown State.
Youngstown State led 8-4 in the first set to force the Vikings to call a time out, but CSU battled back and tied the score at 9-9. The Vikings then took a 17-11 lead as part of a 13-3 run en route to the 25-15 victory. Koch had six of Cleveland State's 17 kills in the set.
Cleveland State scored four straight points to open the second set, but Youngstown State rallied and cut the deficit to two twice. YSU trailed just 9-7 before Cleveland State went on an 8-2 run to go up 17-9 behind Brittany Holland's serve. YSU got no closer than seven the rest of the set. Koch had six more kills, connecting on six of nine attempts with one error.
The third set was closer throughout, but Cleveland State never trailed. YSU tied the score at 2-2 on a Koch error, but Cleveland State ran off nine of the next 10 points to go up 11-3. Youngstown State climbed to within 14-9 on a Kelsi Bitter kill, and the Penguins trailed just 18-15 on a Haley Kapferer block. Cleveland State scored the next three points to go up by six, and the seven-point final margin was the biggest differential since 11-3.
Youngstown State will play its final two home matches of the season next weekend. YSU will welcome Valparaiso on Friday at 7 p.m. and Loyola on Saturday at 2 p.m.
