Guins Wrap Up First Half of League Slate at Wright State on Saturday

Fairborn, Ohio -- Youngstown State will wrap up its first tour of the Horizon League on Saturday at Wright State's Nutter Center at 5 p.m. The Penguins will try to rebound from a disappointing loss at Detroit on Thursday while Wright State will try to keep momentum from a victory at the buzzer over Cleveland State.

Scouting Wright State
Wright State enters the contest on an emotional high, coming off a 60-58 win at the buzzer over Horizon League-leading Cleveland State on Thursday. The Raiders earned their second league victory and snapped a four-game losing streak. Opponents are shooting 44.9 percent against the Raiders, which ranks them ninth in the league. LaShawna Thomas averages a team-high 11.7 points, and five other players average at least seven points.

Turnovers Down from Last Season
Youngstown State has done a much better job of taking care of the basketball through the first 19 games of this season than in 2008-09. YSU is committing 19.5 turnovers per contest this year, which is down from 23.8 last year. The Penguins have not committed more than 25 turnovers in a game this season, which is something they did seven times last year.

Free-Throw Shooting Improving
Youngstown State had its best free-throw shooting night of the season against Detroit on Thursday, making 17-of-20 attempts for 85 percent. Through the first eight Horizon League contests, Youngstown State is shooting 70.9 percent from the free-throw line, which ranks fifth in the conference. The Penguins made just 59 percent in their 11 non-conference games. YSU has shot at least 64 percent from the free-throw line in 10 of its last 12 contests, which is something it did only twice in its first seven games.

Steals Increasing in League Play
Fresh off registering double-digit steals in back-to-back games, Youngstown State is averaging 10.6 steals in its eight Horizon League contests. That rate ranks second in the conference. YSU had a season-high 18 steals at Cleveland State on Jan. 22, which was its highest since 2002. Overall, YSU is averaging 8.5 steals, which is up from 7.1 last season. In fact, the 8.5 steals per game is the highest since the Penguins averaged 9.6 steals in 2001-02.

A Need for Consistent Shooting
Youngstown State had its best shooting day in nearly four years when it shot 50 percent (25-for-50) against Green Bay on Jan. 4. In the following six games, YSU has shot better than 32 percent just once - 41.3 percent against Butler. The Penguins shot a season-low 21.4 percent against Detroit on Thursday, making 12 of 56 attempts. YSU has shot under 35 percent in 11 of its last 13 contests and been under 38 percent 17 times in 19 games.

Brown Moving Up on Freshman Records Lists
Forward Brandi Brown has a chance to have one of the best seasons for a freshman in YSU history. Through 19 games and with at least 11 remaining, Brown has grabbed 206 rebounds, which ranks fourth among freshman in school history. If she keeps up her average of 10.8, she'll pass Jen Perugini's record of 239 caroms in four games. If she maintains her scoring average of 12 points, she'll also pass Caroline McCombs scoring record of 346 points.
