Tiara Scott scored a game-high 22 points and junior Velissa Vaughn
hit a mid-range jumper with 38 seconds remaining to lift the
Youngstown State women's basketball team to a 62-59 over Detroit on
Thursday evening at Calihan Hall.
The Penguins improve to 11-12 overall and 6-6
in the Horizon League while Detroit falls to 3-19 overall and 0-11
in the league.
Detroit's Zemora Davis hit a jumper just
under a minute remaining to give the Titans a 59-58 lead.
After Vaughn's jumper put the Guins back up
by one, senior Heather Karner, who scored 12 points, canned two
free throws with 13 seconds left to seal the victory.
The Guins also connected on 14-of-18 from the
free throw line in the second half.
In the first half, the Penguins trailed by
two, 19-17, at the 8:15 mark, but used a 10-run over the four
minutes to take an eight-point lead, 27-19, with 4:07 to go.
Detroit, however, outscored the Penguins,
9-4, to close out the half and the Guins led at halftime by just
three, 31-28.
The Penguins and Titans each shot 38.8
percent and while the Titans took 18 more shots than YSU, the Guins
went 21-of-26 from the charity stripe for the game.
The Guins visit Wright State, Saturday, Feb.
16, at 1 p.m. at the Nutter Center.
