Strong Service Game Lifts Penguins to Sweep at Green Bay

Green Bay, Wis. -- The
Youngstown State volleyball team used 10 aces and committed just
one serving error to defeat Green Bay in straight sets (25-20,
25-22, 25-18) on Friday evening.
Sophomore Laurie Shives had a match-high five
aces while Ebony Barbosa and Amanda Gray had two apiece. YSU also
tied its best serve receiving performance of the season with just
one error.
Barbosa had a double-double with 10 kills and
16 digs, both of which were team highs. Tasha Reid had eight
kills, a .333 hitting percentage and a team-high four blocks.
The match featured 19 ties and 10 lead changes,
including nine ties and five lead changes in the first set. Haley
Kapferer had four of her six kills in the first set while Ruth
Boscaljon had four of her seven. YSU hit a match-best .250 in that
first set while Green Bay hit .268. The Phoenix, however, committed
four service errors and two reception errors to offset nine kills
from Holly Visser.
Barbosa had six kills and Reid had five in the
second set, and the Penguins had four aces. YSU also held Visser to
just one kill in 12 attempts to win 25-22. Visser's kill put the
Phoenix up 17-12, but the Penguins scored the next nine points on
Shives' serve. Three of Shives' aces came in a four-serve
span during the run.
The Penguins then scored five straight points
in the third set to turn a 6-3 deficit into an 8-6 lead, and they
never trailed again.
YSU also recorded 11 aces in its last match
against Butler, which was the first time it had more than seven
this season.
The sweep of Green Bay was also YSU's first
three-set victory in a Horizon League road contest.
YSU will play at Milwaukee on Saturday at 3
p.m. Eastern.
