Solid All-Around Play Leads Penguins to 3-1 Win over Green Bay

State posted its highest hitting percentage in a month and four
different players had at least 15 digs as the Penguins defeated
Green Bay 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 18-25, 25-21) on Sunday.
Laurie Shives had a team-high 18 digs and
three aces, Ebony Barbosa had her second-straight double-double,
and Ruth Boscaljon registered 11 kills and six blocks.
YSU (9-9, 2-6 Horizon) hit .289 as a
team, which was its best output since hitting .384 against Saint
Peter's on Sept. 13. Boscaljon's .417 effort was a team-high while
Karla Everhart hit .385 and Haley Kapferer hit .381.
Liesl Tesch had 16 kills to lead four
players posting least 10 kills for Green Bay (8-10, 4-4
Horizon).
YSU used a 17-3 run in the first set to
turn a 12-6 deficit into a 23-15 lead. Everhart served six straight
points during the run while Shives served eight straight. Barbosa,
Tasha Reid and Boscaljon had three kills apiece for YSU in the set
as the Penguins hit .353.
YSU jumped out to a 6-2 lead and never
trailed in the second set. Barbosa posted five kills while Everhart
had three kills and 19 assists.
Green Bay scored the first four points
and never trailed in the third set, but YSU responded by battling
through five lead changes and nine ties in the fourth set to win
25-21. After YSU built a 6-3 advantage, neither team led by more
than three in the set. Boscaljon connected on six of her 10
attempts, and Shives had eight digs.
YSU will play three road matches next
week, starting with Tuesday's match at Pittsburgh at 7 p.m.
