YSU Closes Out Regular Season at Wright State With Tournament Seedings On Line

Dayton, Ohio -- The Youngstown State women's basketball team (7-19, 5-10 Horizon League) closes out the regular season with tournament seedings on the line when it visits Wright State (9-17, 7-8), Saturday, March 1. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio.

The Penguins, who are tied for sixth place with Cleveland State and Loyola in the Horizon League standings, are trying to snap a four-game losing streak and secure the sixth seed in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament.

Although tied with the Vikings and Ramblers with 5-10 league marks and each team owning 2-2 records against each other, the Penguins win the tie-breaker by virtue of its win over UIC on Jan. 6.

With a win and/or losses by Cleveland State and Loyola, the Penguins would seal the No. 6 seed in the tournament. If the Penguins lose and either Cleveland State or Loyola wins, the Penguins would finish seventh. The Penguins could fall to eighth with a loss and wins by both Cleveland State and Loyola on Saturday.

Wright State earned the fifth seed in the tourney after defeating Cleveland State, 63-55 on Thursday evening at the Nutter Center.

Scouting the Raiders
Wright State is in fifth place in the Horizon League standings with a 7-8 record and owns an overall mark of 9-17. The Raiders are led by senior Brittney Whiteside with 13.8 points per game and junior Whitney Lewis averages 10.4 points per game.

The Butler Series
This will be the 33rd meeting between Youngstown State and Wright State. The Penguins own a 19-13 advantage in the all-time series but the Raiders have won the last seven contests, including a 57-52 victory at the Beeghly Center earlier this season. Youngstown State has not won at the Nutter Center since the 2003-04 season.

Last Time Out
Youngstown State shot just 28.3 percent and dropped a 59-45 decision to Butler on Thursday evening. Freshman Ta-myra Davis and junior Heather Karner each posted eight points to lead the Penguins.

Last Time Against the Raiders
In the first meeting this season, Wright State snuck out of Beeghly Center with a 57-52 victory on Dec. 28. Junior Heather Karner led the Penguins with 14 points.

Ides of March
"Beware the ides of March" is an appropriate phrase for the Youngstown State women's basketball team in recent years. The Penguins lost the last eight games they have played in March and have not been victorious since defeating Valparaiso, 73-57, in the Mid-Con Tournament Championship game on March 7, 2000.

Branson Now 10th All-Time
Junior Lauren Branson continues her ascent up the YSU all-time assists chart. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native currently has 313 career assists and moved into 10th place on the YSU all-time career assists list. She also needs two more to move into ninth place, 12 more for eighth and 13 more to move into seventh place.

Mo On the Money
Over the last 12 Horizon League games, sophomore Monique Godfrey has been hard to stop. The 5-foot-8 guard is averaging 13.3 points per game and has posted double digit scoring marks in eight of the last 12 contests, including a career-high 21 points against UW-Milwaukee on Feb. 17 and 20 points against Loyola on Feb. 3.

Droppin' Dimes

Karner Nearing Top 10
Junior Heather Karner, the Penguins' top 3-point shooter, is approaching the YSU single-season 3-point top 10 list. Karner, who has 50 treys this season, needs three more to move into 10th place on the single-season chart.

Vaughn League Leader
After connecting on just 8.3 percent of her 3-point attempts as a freshman, sophomore Velissa Vaughn has improved tremendously her 3-point shooting accuracy. The Clairton, Pa., native is shooting 40.5 percent from behind the arc this season but owns a league-best 52.6 3-point percentage against Horizon League foes.

Pendleton Ties Scoring High
For the third time this season, sophomore Ashley Pendleton tied a career-best performance against UW-Milwaukee last Saturday. Pendleton tied a career scoring high with 10 points and also grabbed six rebounds. Pendleton also scored 10 points against Loyola on Jan. 4 and 10 points against the Ramblers on Feb. 3.
